Pranged someone's car..advice needed

Sare, 20 September, 2008 at 17:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Having a horrible day anyway, full of cold and to top it all I've just reversed into a neighbour's car, and dented the door.

It was completely my fault, and he says it will be a new door so I'm guessing it's better to go through insurance but the office is closed.

I've never had an accident before, so could someone tell me the procedure?

I know I have to pay a £250 excess and will lose 2 years no claims.

Call your insurance company - they should have a 24 hour claim line. If not do it tomorrow - you'll need the other persons insurance details and they will handle it all from there.

They'll just ask you some questions about where it happened, how etc.

If you do not have no claims protection you will lose 2 years and you won't be able to claim any for the current year you are in either.

But don't worry, these things happen!

My neighbour did exactly the same thing to me and I went through my insurance as he was being really awkward about coughing up his details.

I'd call your insurance company and they'll ask for what happened and all the details of yourself and your neighbour and then your neighbour calls their insurance company and the insurance companies work out the details about repair etc. I got a courtesy car and my car door was replaced, the car resprayed etc. To do the work that was required to get my car back on track was £900 as the whole door needed replaced and then the car sprayed.

It's pretty easy, the insurance companies liase and sort everything out.

Oh, what a pain. Before you go through your insurance, find out how much it will be to get it fixed. It could be that it's better for you to pay for it than to lose 2 years of no claims and £250.

Ask him to take it for a quote and to tell them that it's not an insurance job - they rack the price up if they know the insurance are paying!

WSS, I did this for the guy who did the same to my car in a car park. Got it done for about £50 more than the insurance excess but he wanted to keep his no claims as the £50 extra would have worked out cheaper than losing no claims.

Sorry for not thanking earlier but the topic title seemed to disappear.

Thanks for all the replies, I've decided to sort it through the insurance because I think it will cost a lot more than the excess and NCB loss, but also because whilst he wasn't aggressive he was very abrupt (probably understandable) and I feel very nervous dealing with him about repair cost directly.

If the only damage is to your neighbour's car it's a third part claim so there will be no excess to pay. I did the same 4 months ago. I rang my insurance company, she ran hers and it was all sorted.

Thanks Lucylu, you're right, they say I don't have to pay an excess so that's one silver lining at least.
