Probably thick food poisoning question

Sare, 28 April, 2008 at 19:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 2

Obviously I know that most meat needs to be cooked properly, but what about fish?
Fish fingers have a specified cooking time so can you get poisoning if you don't cook them properly? I know sushi is raw and that's ok.

I don't know about the food poisoning (though aren't prawns quite frequent causes of it), but I did find the vaguest instruction ever on some haddock fillets I bought from Sainsbury's - "oven cook for 12-26 minutes". I stuck them in for 20 minutes and am still here to tell the tale ?

Fish can usually be eaten raw - there's nothing that grows in it that would cause a healthy adults any problems. Fish generally becomes inedible long before it's grown enough bacteria to give you food poisoning - it stinks when it goes off. However you do need to be careful with things like shellfish. eg mussels must be cooked from live, so you need to get rid of any that don't close when tapped before cooking and any that don't then open when they are cooked.

    Thanks to you both.
I never know about fish fingers because they seem to use a white liquid and I wasn't sure if that was a sign of being uncooked. It's probably that they are made with scrapings from fish skin?
