Products like Dettol but not as smelly?

Bird., 4 April, 2008 at 21:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

My old, terminally ill Mum sometimes wets the bed at night? and Dad has to wash her in the mornings. He has been using Dettol diluted in warm water but the whole house is starting to smell very clinical.

Does anyone know of any similar products that can be used for bathing but are milder and not so strong smelling?

Thanks

Zoflora comes in a range of different fragrances, I think.

Actually, looking at their site, I'm not so sure about the bathing aspect. It's not clear from the FAQ whether it's the concentrated form which shouldn't come into contact with skin or in its diluted form. I don't have a bottle in the house at the moment to check.

I was just reading that, I can't find any reference to it being used for bathing either. There must be something out there!

    Thanks for your help ?

I would suggest a sulphur=based bleach like Napisan.

Ignore me - sorry - thought you wanted something to wash down bedding etc.

For skin I'd just use soap. It's antibacterial in itself so it'll do the job but much kinder than dettol.

? for you and your family.

zoflora isn't suitable for bathing. What about something like Original Source mint and t-tree shower gel?

I would recommend soap and water, in a bowl, to clean your mum's skin. Does he have a supply of absorbent disposable pads for the bed, to make things a bit easier for him? Your mum can lie on them, they are still soft. Get him to ask your mum's district nurse/similar for them.

Perhaps an essential oil diluted in the water? Tea tree to me smells just as clinical as Dettol but I think lavender is considered antiseptic?

I'll bounce your BT post as post birth women who've had an episiotomy are sometimes advised to try essential oils. I'm sure someone there will be able to suggest appropriate ones.

Bird, sorry to hear about your Mum ?

Just a thought, but could your Dad buy her some of those adult Tena-esk pants for wearing at night? That might help - or does she already?

I'm trying to think what we used for my Dad, but for the life of me can't remember. Probably blocked it out.

    What about something like this?

Hiya, thanks for the suggestions everyone?

She already wears tena knickers AND has the large absorbant sheets things that you lie on.

She has advanced Parkinsons and a severe form of Dementia so mornings are a pretty traumatic experience - she is unable to stand in the shower unaided and she cries and gets very distressed. He has been using Dettol to try and make sure she is properly clean and so she doesn't get smelly. Soap makes her skin very dry and sore. We use Sudacrem on her skin as well if she is a bit chapped.

I think I'll have a scout about for anti-bac body washes etc be plenty of Dettol-esque tyoe things on the market but it appears not!

Thank you for your help - not the nicest of topics I know?

I am sorry to hear about your mum, Bird.

I would be concerned about your dad using such things as Dettol to clean your mum's skin. As a staff nurse and having to clean up patients who are or have been incontinent, we use soap and water and if the skin is cleaned well enough then there is no problem with smell. Her skin is likely to be dry and chapped because of the dettol.

Another good thing to use on the skin apart from the sudocrem is Metanium or drapolene. They are the sorts of cream used on nappy rash and are fantastic.

Sorry to hear about your Mum. She really needs a District Nurse referral especially if her bottom is sore. They should also have ideas on how best to care for your mums toileting issues and hygiene. You can get a nurse to visit by contacting her GP.

Sorry to hear about your Mum.

I bought a bottle of dettol from Wilko's on Monday and it was orange and lavender oil scented, it smells quite nice.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mum, it must be very hard for you all. Have you thought of using baby products to clean her as these are milder than normal soap.
