Professional Hair and Make-up?

hanaroo, 28 June, 2016 at 15:01 Posted on Planning 0 9

Is it worth it?

Do I just pay for myself and not MOB and Bridesmaids or if I have my hair and make-up professionally done should I pay for my mum's and my bridesmaids to have theirs done?

If I pay for my mum should I also pay for my MIL?

I'm working out my budget and the quotes I've had for me, bridesmaids and MOB range from £515 - £648...Is it really worth it? Or should I save that money?

In practical terms, the groom's mum is not usually included in hair & makeup because she won't be with you when you're getting ready (usually!)

You could ask the BM's if they would like professional HMUA and if so are they willing to pay £30 each towards the cost? Same for your own mum.

I paid for myself, bridesmaids and mom. We had a minimum of four - and that worked out to be four.

I thought it was worth it because I wanted us to look our best. We had spent such a lot on photographers that it seemed worth it. Plus it's a bit of bonding time and one less thing to worry about.

    Hiya,

I wanted my BMs (5) to have their hair and make-up done, and my mum decided she wanted hers done too. I'm paying for everyone, £480, my mum has decided she wants to pay for hers (Dad is paying for wedding and as their divorced mum feels awkward him paying).

I would say prof hair and makeup is worth it because you want it to last all day and look good in photos.

I am considering asking £25 contribution from BMs as they did say they wanted make-up doing initially.

I was just going to pay for myself because I just couldn't afford it when looking at £100+ per person. However I found a lovely girl who is just starting out so her prices are lower and I can now afford to pay for me, my bridesmaid, my mum and my future MIL who will be getting ready with us in the morning.

I'm not sure there are expectations for who pays and I certainly wouldn't expect someone to pay out a load of money for me unless they wanted a specific look I couldn't do myself.

I would definitely say it is worth having a professional, the getting ready part of my day was so much fun, the bridal party was so chilled out as we just got pampered! I was quite lucky as my cousin is my hairdresser so she came up on the morning with my bridesmaids & did all our hair for free (I did get her a lovely bottle of champagne to say thank you!) I then told my mum & 2 bridesmaids if they wanted make up doing they would have to pay for it themselves (£35 each), my mum & sister did, my other bridesmaid did her own make up.

None of mine expected to me for pay for it but I didn't tell them I wanted specific hairstyles or make up looks. xxxx

I'm going to pay for myself & my three bridesmaids, but if my sister & mum want booking in too I think they'll pay for themselves. I think it's up to you really - every time I've been a bridesmaid I've had my hair & make up done professionally & the bride has booked & paid for it all - except for when I was bridesmaid to my sister actually! I think I paid for that myself.

One thing I found is that it was much cheaper for me to book to go to a local hair salon to get our hair done, rather than someone coming to the house - & also my regular nail lady is doing our make up, as the professional MUAs were out of our budget - not knocking them at all, but I thought I would stick to those people I know & feel comfortable with & it's kept the cost down as much as possible. I think in total it's going to cost £300 for hair & make up for myself (with trials), my two adult bridesmaids & my 11 year old niece. One MUA I contacted wanted £350 just for me & I can't justify the cost.

Thanks ladies. I did all the make-up for my sisters wedding and found it very stressful, she had someone come and do our hair and it did help keep everyone to a schedule...I think I'll see about some other prices but I'll save money elsewhere to cover the cost.

I think I went in a bit naive at how much it would cost, I'll have a chat with my mum and my bridesmaids to see if they can contribute a bit to the cost

Yeah I was shocked at the average prices of these, but if you have never done it before, or been closely involved in any wedding planning then why would you know?

We paid for both hair and make up for myself and 3 bridesmaids, as my mum got ready elsewhere. I had the same lovely woman doing both, and for hair or make up £65, both was £85 so figured for only an extra £20 each it was worth it, and I am so glad I did, the pampering in the morning and just all laughing and it being fun again was great, and I have to say, out of everything that we spent money on that wasn't for us, ie suits, dresses, etc, this was the best thing we spent, they all loved it, and as someone else said, they make you keep to a schedule which you don't realise can very easily over-run, and she was brilliant for time keeping too.

I'm paying for hair for me, my four bridesmaids, my mum and OH's mum. I asked my mum and my bridesmaids if they wanted their make up doing and they said yes so they are paying for this.

I found both my hairdresser and my make up artist through wedding pages on FB. They are much cheaper than ones you find at wedding fairs etc. Make up is £30 each and I am paying £215 for all of our hair x

    Hi,

I am a professional Makeup Artist and in my experience the bride usually pays for herself, the bridesmaids and mother of the bride as they are normally all with you on the morning of the wedding. This however is totally down to you and your budget. I normally will try to accommodate the brides budget by offering a discount if they are booking for several people and i am bringing my hairdresser too.

If you have professionals already in mind it could be worth you asking if they'll give you a group discount? Or you could just pay for yourself, Chief bridesmaid and your Mum and ask the other bridesmaids to pay for themselves or contribute towards the costs if they want it done professionally.

I would however, highly recommend you having it done on the day as it is such a lovely experience, it creates the memories forever and will make you feel fantastic for your day to shine.

I hope this has helped but if you wanted to look at my prices to give you rough guide for your budget, my website address is: lucy-jones.co.uk
