Project Managers - anyone taken/got the APMP qualification?

rrr, 11 July, 2008 at 21:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

Just wondering really. I've just got back from a 5 day intensive course with a 3 hour exam this afternoon and I'm feeling pretty fried. Not sure if I did enough to pass.

Just how well known are AMP qualifications? I'm thinking of doing a Prince2 one as well, even though we don't follow that process at work but I wonder if it may hold me in good stead if I left.

Any opinions? Thank you!

Just ask bloke who is a PM and he said prince2 is the more recognised qualification although most employees would recognise the AMP if backed with experience.

I don't know about the AMP one, but will throw in my opinion on Prince2, as I did that this year. Same thing - 5 days intensive and 3 hours exam at the end. Although it's not easy, I think as long as you pay a bit of attention and have a dollop of common sense, it's very passable. From the people I spoke to, it's mostly used (as a methodology) in the public sector. On our course (12 peope) public sector were definitely the majority. Tbh, if I were to employ someone onto my team, I wouldn't really care if they had Prince2 or not. If you haven't got it, you can get it easily enough in those 5 days. It's just one methodology - and though there's nothing wrong with it - if you're already a Project Manager, I don't think it develops you any as an individual. However, some colleagues said they'd seen it mentioned in quite a few job adverts. I haven't really looked at those recently, but if I were self funding, I'd check out the job adverts for the type of position and sector I was looking for, and see how often it was mentioned. Or maybe ask a (specialist) agency opinion?

Well done getting through this week - hope you passed!

Our tutor was pretty vocal about saying that Prince2 at the same level is a lot easier to pass as it is an open book exam? Sounds a bit suspicious to me. I know deep down I should have done enough to pass this exam (which work paid for) and if I did pass I think I'll do some self studying and will put myself forward for the exam as it won't harm my CV.

Congrats on ending your APMP course! APMP is usual in assignment management, although its focus can vary. Don't fear too much about the exam; you may have discovered more than you think.

Considering PRINCE2 certification, even if it is now not used at your job, it can nevertheless be useful for future opportunities. It suggests your dedication to gaining knowledge and can improve your credibility as a venture manager. Keep pursuing your goals!
