Public Liability Insurance

loxtonm, 11 February, 2009 at 21:46 Posted on Planning 0 3

Have a problem any ideas to solve it would be so greatfull. I have found the perfect photographer, I love his work, he is great value for money but he hasn't got public liability insurance. The venue where we are getting married has stated that any outside contractors must have public liability insurance. I can understand DJ needed it but the photographer why would he need it. Does anyone know if you can get this insurance for one day. The photographer hasn't had this problem in the past.

Thanks

I can see why your venue requires it. It's probably a condition within their own insurance policy. For example, if the photographer trips someone over with a cable, or his case or tripod. Or if he damages any of the venue or it's furniture.

He should be able to get the insurance easily enough through his current insurers, probably as an extension to his existing liabilty insurance. I'm sure HIB can advise if they normally have this cover or not.

I have PLI for attending fairs and it cost me £86 for the year. I am sure if he wants your business he will get this sorted or the venue could come a go a little bit. If all else fails then maybe get all your photo's taken elsewhere and not in venue.

I don't think as the bride you should have to pay this hunni.

    Hi !

This has happened to me before where I've been asked if I have the PLI at 'stately home' type venues with lots of antiques. I do have it now but I didn't always have it and when pressed just asked the couple to let their venue contact me direct if they had a problem, they never did.

It is a good idea to have it anyway, and your photographer may be able to get a short-term policy that is a lot cheaper than an annual contract. In any case all I have to do now, when asked, is sign a piece of a paper to say I have it, the details have never been checked. (take from this what you will!)

    Hi there,

Yes, I agree with the previous posters - It is a little strange for a photographer to be required to have PLI. But, I suppose they could walk backwards into an antique whilst taking a shot - that sort of thing. We as a band have £9million worth of PLI and it only costs us £400 for a year - I can see why it applies to us as we bring in heavy items, hot items, loud items, stuff you can trip over, cables galore etc. I imagine that a daily PLI won't be too bad but your photographer should seriously consider it on a yearly basis - it won't break the bank.

Can I also say that I don't think you should be worrying about it. Your venue requires PLI, and as another poster said, if he wants your business then he should be looking in to this, not you.

    My 10p worth!

    all the best

    Tony
