QQ - turning off a fridge, and minimising the smell. As dull as they come!

This is really dull...

In my kitchen is an integrated fridge which I inherited, and my own freestanding Smeg. There's only two of us, so we don't need all this refrigeratory capacity! But losing one or the other completely is not an option.

I want to turn off the integrated fridge to save electricity, but OH reckons it'll pong if unused. I know I can leave the door open, but this will look a mess and is a PITA. Are there any ways I can minimise the odour whilst the fridge is turned off? Any miracle baking soda cures???

Thankies ?

    1. Wash out the fridge thoroughly with a good disinfectant / dilute bleach - its the bugs that make the smell

    2. Dry thoroughly with a clean cloth / leave to air for a while - keeping it dry will also minimise odour

    3. Place a small tray containing an absorbant substance in the fridge to mop up any smells - I've seen everything from baking soda to talc and charcoal suggested - take your pick.

    4. Check regularly, repeating 1-3 if necessary.

Thank you P&P - that is a perfect solution. I have a load of unused talc lying around which should do the job.

Vanilla essence is also good to use.

Can you prop it slightly open with a matchbox or similar and tape the door closed in that position?

    Thanks for the tips!

Vanilla essence sounds good, CG, if talc isn't strong enough.

LF - My OCD OH would have sleepless nights if the lines of the kitchen were broken up in such a way ?

When my mum moved recently, the removal company recommended putting unused teabags into the fridge and the freezer to stop them smelling!
