Quorn mince

Clare _ M, 19 August, 2008 at 21:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

Has anyone had it? Can you tell the difference massively from real mince?

I'm trying to follow a vegetarian diet at the moment and all this talk of meatballs has made me crave them. To be honest, I haven't noticed a difference so could well be back to eating meat by Monday but I want meatballs now (well, tomorrow). ?

It's OK I think - I can tell the difference from meat but it's a reasonable alternative. It doesn't have any flavour of its own so it does need cooking in a sauce to give it flavour. Depends why you're doing a veggie diet really.

Well, I have terrible digestion and a friend who was the same has said that by cutting out meat she's finding things "moving" a lot better.

I haven't eaten meat (have eaten fish) for over 2 weeks now and it hasn't made a difference. That's why I'm only giving it another week. H reckons it takes 3 weeks to move meat through your system.

Everyone could be lying to me though and I've done this for absolutely no reason at all. ?

Sorry, should have said thanks for answering.

So if I cook it as meatballs with lots of herbs and in a sauce I could get away with it then?

I have been a veggie for 15 years now so cant recall what meat tastes like now. However I really like corn mince in spag bol which we had for tea last night.H eats meat but he will eat quorn in spag bol as he said you cant really tell the difference to much. However other corn products such a the chicken like stuff he says are awful as they are to bland.I do think you have to add sauces to it to taste though as it doesnt really taste of much to be honest.

Definitely needs plenty of added flavour

I normally use it in a chilli, although H could tell then difference and politely requested I never ever gave it to him again

Should be OK as meatballs with lots of herbs and/or other flavours

That's pretty much bollocks I'm afraid - it's a myth that's come out of who knows where but seems to come up again and again. Your body is perfectly designed to eat a range of things, including meat. It produces enzymes especially for the purpose which means that it doesn't stay in your system anywhere near that long.

So basically if there was going to be a difference I would have noticed it by now? So it's all been a waste of time!!!!

H and his mum both had steak at the weekend in front of me. Thankfully they eat it well done because I think I may well have eaten with my fingers off their plates. ?

Quorn also make 'meatballs' and they're very good. They come frozen in bags, but I find they taste better if you defrost them before cooking.

I usually saute some onion, garlic, rosemary and chopped chilli, then add the Quorn balls and brown, then add a tin of chopped tomatoes and some red wine and simmer for a bit before serving with spagetti.

Takes half an hour all told and tastes fab. HTH

Ive recently got into this because I don't like beef, and my options were getting more limited! (don't eat pork or lamb either). I have done an excellent chilli with it, and also a moussaka which was very good. As everyoine else said, you really do need to add flavour. I want to try a cottage pie type thing soon too.

We use these as well and quite often do meatballs and spaghetti.

We cook the quorn meatballs in the microwave and then add them to the sauce and they are indeed delish
