range cooker peeps - electric agas? vs lacanche macon

fox-in-socks, 10 April, 2009 at 22:00 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0

Has anyone looked at them / got an electric aga? at the moment the lacanche macon is winning in our hunt for a range, but after seeing we could get an electric aga (with gas hob, natch) for the same or less, it's suddenly back in the running.

gah, this is so confusing. and nowhere has everything in one place so it's a case of hunting out different suppliers all over the place.

Do you mean the Aga range style cooker? ie. gas hobs but electric ovens. We had a look at that too but all we could see that it had going for it was the Aga styling (attractive, I know). The ovens were very small and not very energy efficient- think they were C rated. We saw it at an Aga showroom and the staff weren't very positive about it, but it could have been they were more interested in selling us a conventional Aga! Aga's after-sales service isn't rated very highly and I thought it would be better to get a range style cooker from a company that concentrates on just these rather than Aga which is obviously much better known for its traditional heat source cookers.

Out of the two, I'd go for a Lacanche Macon. It was a very close call for me between the Macon and the Britannia XG Dynasty. I was very swayed by the "look" of the Macon and also the fact it was more customisable. As you know , in the end, I went for the Britannia XG Dynasty- which was the same price as the Lacanche- because JL were very complimentary about Britannia's customer service and the Britannia had more features and better energy efficiency. JL also sell Lacanche but weren't as positive- but that could just be the view of one particular branch . There really wasn't much in it though for me. I ummed and aahhed for a long time and drove my husband mad. Then I read that Simon Hopkinson had an old Britannia and I thought if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me!

There were a couple of independent showrooms near me that sell both Agas and Lacanche cookers. If there's no-where near you try ringing somewhere like this for their thoughts: https://www.robeys.co.uk/pages/cookers/lacanche/lacanche.php
