Readings related to football!?

Buzzee, 23 August, 2011 at 16:56 Posted on Planning 0 14

Looking into readings and we've picked one of the common-ish ones (On Your Wedding Day, i think its called). This will be ready by our teenage nephew, and am looking for something else to be read by one of OH's friends. I just think something that maybe relates football or sport to love/team work/communication would be ideal. But can't seem to find anything at all! Just wondered if anyone had any ideas!!

The Vicar at St Nicholas's Church in Old Stevenage used to have a great line in football jokes aimed at the groom. His sermons were always a thing to look out for at weddings...

Not a helpful post as it suggests nothing...although the post made me remember when this idea has been done before to great effect...

Peter, that's the sort of thing i have in my head (though it would need to be non-religious!)

Any ideas anyone!? I don't think the usher (or me) for that matter is imaginative to write something ourselves!

    How about this:

When you walk through the storm
    Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
    There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark

    Walk on, through the wind
    Walk on, through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
    And you'll never walk alone
    You'll never walk alone

Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
    And you'll never walk alone
    You'll never walk alone

Sorry if you support Man Utd....

We had A Lovely Love Story by Edward Monkton and where it read "overly fond of things" we changed it to football. My H's sons read alternative verses and it was really cute and the 9 year old got a few laughs.

The fierce Dinosaur was trapped inside his cage of ice.
Although it was cold he was happy in there. It was, after all, his cage.

Then along came the Lovely Other Dinosaur.
The Lovely Other Dinosaur melted the Dinosaur’s cage with kind words and loving thoughts.

I like this Dinosaur thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur.
Although he is fierce he is also tender and he is funny.
He is also quite clever though I will not tell him this for now.

I like this Lovely Other Dinosaur, thought the Dinosaur.
She is beautiful and she is different and she smells so nice.
She is also a free spirit which is a quality I much admire in a dinosaur.

But he can be so distant and so peculiar at times, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur.
He is also overly fond of things.
Are all Dinosaurs so overly fond of things?

But her mind skips from here to there so quickly thought the Dinosaur.
She is also uncommonly keen on shopping.
Are all Lovely Other Dinosaurs so uncommonly keen on shopping?

I will forgive his peculiarity and his concern for things, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur.
For they are part of what makes him a richly charactered individual.

I will forgive her skipping mind and her fondness for shopping, thought the Dinosaur.
For she fills our life with beautiful thoughts and wonderful surprises. Besides,
I am not unkeen on shopping either.

Now the Dinosaur and the Lovely Other Dinosaur are old.
    Look at them.
Together they stand on the hill telling each other stories and feeling the warmth of the sun on their backs.

And that, my friends, is how it is with love.
Let us all be Dinosaurs and Lovely Other Dinosaurs together.
    For the sun is warm.
And the world is a beautiful place

Ha, my OH is an Everton fan - as is his whole family. Would be quite funny to have this at our wedding! Might be the shortest marriage ever though..

We're red plastic Scousers in this house and we were thinking of having it played during our wedding, but I find it quite a sad song as I associate it with Hillsborough as well as LFC. ☹️

I love that song but OH hates it for football reasons. Carousel is one of my favourite musicals and that's my reason for loving it.

That’s such a unique idea for a reading – incorporating football into the ceremony really personalizes the whole experience! My partner and I are both massive football fans, and we’re actually considering a themed section during the vows too. We even looked into some fun ways to keep the guests engaged during the reception, like interactive sports elements. If you're into the sport beyond just readings, you might find some creative inspiration here – it’s a cool platform for sports lovers with a fresh take on engagement and community.

That’s such a creative idea, tying football into a reading about love and teamwork. Sports already carry so many parallels: trust, communication, celebrating wins together, and supporting each other through tough times. You could even adapt a famous football quote into something meaningful for the occasion. And for day-to-day fans, apps like Sportzfy APK Download keep that passion alive by streaming live matches and highlights, showing how football connects people everywhere. Just like marriage, it’s all about being on the same team.
