Reception ideas - alternatives to DJ?

MrsPearcetobe, 18 February, 2012 at 16:20 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi all, I know there are tonnes of posts about receptions on here but I couldn't find what I was after so thought I'd do my own post to try and get inspiration!

We're getting married in December and are trying to decide what to have for our evening entertainment. Its going to be a fairly small do (max 50 all day) and we are not inviting additional people for the evening so we want something that everyone can get involved in and enjoy but don't really want a DJ.

Can anyone help with ideas to give me inspiration please?!

thanks ?

I saw an ad for a service that would provide a sound system for a party, and you just plugged in your laptop or ipod and did your own playlists. Can't remember what it was called, though, sorry. If your venue has speakers, you could always see if hooking up a computer would work, and then you could have a preplanned list of songs to play, and have an usher or family member in charge of making sure it stayed going.

Thought about a celeidh and found a fantastic band called The Haywainers but in the end went for a violinist/pianist called Simon Jordan who is playing with another musician for my ceremony, reception and evening entertainment. They take requests, play live and play a vast range of music, so I've already given them a list of my likes and dislikes. Now thinking about the venue, who are proving a hell of a problem!

I'd go with Ceilidh/Barn Dance too. Possibly think about line dancing.

I've worked with a good Ceilidh band based in Cambridge, and they did a great job and the live sound was fantastic.

We followed on with the Brides (must play) requests of Chart music and lost all the older guests in about 2 minutes! (with the younger guests filling the floor until 1am)

I did see the Ceilidh as very popular and good fun - but some of the younger guests spent this time at the bar.
