Registrar Confusion?!

Sassy, 22 June, 2021 at 07:46 Posted on Planning 0 6
Hi guys! I’m reaching out as I don’t know anyone that has got married within 10 years or so! I’ve been reading about booking the registrar for our wedding. We are getting married at a castle that is licensed. Do we have to book a registrar from our local council to legally marry us? It’s working out just under £600 which I just think is so expensive! I was wondering if there’s independent registrars that perhaps travel and can still marry you (maybe finding a better price) or whether you can book from other councils as some appear to be cheaper?!

If anyone has any answers to my questions that would be greatly appreciated!
Also...how is it cheaper to actually get married at the registry office?!?! Crazy!
Thanks so much!

You book a registrar in the area you are marrying and yes they are very expensive. I thought it would be around £300 and ours is £800 !!

I booked mine in January this year for our wedding in 8 weeks. Our council only let you book 1 year in advance but I think it varies council to council.

The licence is only valid for a year, but most registrars will let you provisionally book a date before the year.

Normally it’s a year in advance but given all the covid postponements they might have changed their policy. Once you have a venue I’d attempt to book the registrar.

We booked ours 8months ahead of our original date but luckily we are still within a year so didn’t have to pay twice when we had to postpone.
I’m based in. London and paid £842 for the registrar and £35 each to give notice. It’s not cheap.

We went to Cornwall and it was £590 then £35 each to give notice where we live.
