Registrar dilemma!

Mel, 28 July, 2021 at 10:01 Posted on Planning 0 11
So me and my fiance of 13yrs decided September 2022 was finally the year we was to wed. We called the registry office to make a booking (was told registrar would call back within a week). A month later we had a call back from the registrar wanting the full amount but we didn't have it as we had just booked our venue 2 days before she called... That was fine she said to email her and she would get back within that week...that was back in the first week of June and I've still heard nothing. I've been back in touch with the main call centre 3 time, all 3 times they've emailed her and she still hasn't got back to me. Now I get it they're busy but it takes less than 10 mins to call back for me to make a payment. I know its a while yet until my wedding but I don't want to loose the date and I also don't want her to call again and be in the same predicament as the 1st time around when I didn't have the money....soo stressed!

Thanks hopefully they'll see me to put down a deposit, I did ask this morning if we was just able to go down but she said not without an appointment... Hopefully they won't just shut the door. I just want to put a deposit down as we've put deposits on wedding venue, reception venue I don't want to loose all that money if she can't do the day we asked for.

I feel you - I was in the same boat! I am not sure where you are based, but in the UK you have have booked or already done your ‘notice of marriage’ appointment prior to booking the registrar (who must be local to the county you get married in/your venue)! This was all news to me as I am the worst bride person ever! 😂 Once you have that sorted you can book and pay a deposit (usually around £50) and then pay the final balance after your notice of marriage appointment or 4 weeks prior to your wedding I think is the latest. They send you a whole pack in the post and should explain this on the phone for you though once you have your registrar booking call!

In any case, don’t stress too much as if for any reason you cannot get a registrar for your special date you can always book a celebrant instead and then do a statutory registration of marriage (usually around £45) at a later date. Only issue is you won’t be ‘legally’ married until that is done! But it is a good back up plan if you have already secured the venue and arranged everything else for that time/date!
    Hope that helps! Cami x

I completely understand the frustration with registrars. We didn’t realise we needed to do all this either. We want to get married in St Lucia next summer but that’s only a symbolic ceremony and need to do a legal one here first. Our issue is that we both work abroad and only have 2 weeks left here before we go back. We won’t be back again until December which is when we’d ideally need to do it. Haven’t received any answers so today we’re going to go to the registry office and see if we can get better help. Being there in person may be better to get things done.

OK so took a trip to the office and as expected was told to wait for an appointment and also was told calls take any thing from 2day to 7 weeks(currently on wk8 since I last talked to her) . I think I need to open another account just for wedding purposes.

Yep same thing just happened to us. They gave us a number to call, which we did but they said we will get a call back from the weddings team as they are busy at the moment. It’s a nightmare and adds more stress.

No got back in touch with them to be told the same thing. I've been down and they said they can't see me without an appointment, but they also couldn't make me an appointment either. Honestly I don't know what to do. If I keep paying for other things and loose the date I'll be heart broken and out of pocket.

Yes actually called them and emailed yesterday explaining that other vendors are asking for payments and I don't want her to call and be in the same situation as last time. And if she could give me a date in which she will be calling.. I got an automated reply explaining this years weddings will get priority but they will get back but it could be any time between 2 days and 4 months as they're busy.

Also asked while calling if our date will be safe until she calls but they couldn't confirm as she already tried getting a payment but didn't receive one.

Thank you so much, we're opening an account just for wedding savings so it's easier to have the money ready for her 😊
