Registrar nightmare!!!

Jasmine, 28 February, 2023 at 17:17 Posted on Planning 0 11

I've been trying for months to get hold of the registrar to check their available dates to actually book the wedding. But with no avail. We want to get married in June this year, hence why we want to get it booked ASAP! We keep getting brushed off when we call and get told to email them.. hundred emails down the line, no response!

Is there any other ways around solely relying on a registrar marrying us at the venue... for example, I know we can get married at the registration office before and get a celebrant at the venue, but we're not keen on that approach. Is there anything else we can do?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for responding! I've called the next local office but as it doesn't fall under their area, they can't help me. As far as the reason why we're not keen on the celebrant is because I won't feel comfortable spending thousands on a ceremony and party etc when we're already married and the main thing we want is already done. It's my thing and wanting to do it all on the same day so all the money we're spending actually feels purposeful. It doesn't make sense to me personally. I've already bought my dress and it's too 'dressy' for the registration office ceremony.

I’m so shocked that the registrar is being so difficult! Has your venue got any advice, or any insight into the issue? Surely all their couples must be having the same issue because it’ll be the same district.

A silly thought, but have you tried emailing from different email addresses? Maybe the one you’re using is being caught in their junk filter? Probably not, but I’m just wracking my brain trying to find any possible reason for them not responding!

It's Bedford Borough Council. Nightmare to get hold of them!

They do have a message on the registry office page that they are dealing with a lot of queries and they will respond when they can. If they won't talk to you over the phone then you will just have to wait. As frustrating as that is!

I was thinking perhaps you could go ahead and give notice to the council that you were going to get married - but I remembered you probably need a marriage date (as agreed with the registrar, venue, etc!) in order to book your "giving noticed" appointment. Sorry, it sounds very frustrating!

My council (London-based) is also being very slow with responding to emails - in this case, we are trying to pay the registrar fee and they are not sending a link through! And also there is an email from them saying there is a high volume of emails.

Oh my, when I was doing ours through our chosen city's council I thought I would experience this but I literally had a response within a week and managed to secure our venue.

Is your borough council accepting face to face enquiries at their reception desk, could be another route of action if you aren't getting anywhere on the phone or email. I can feel your frustration as many venues won't confirm until you have your registrar confirmed Smiley atonished

Update: Finally had a call back from the Registrar... they've told me they're changing their booking system and are no longer taking bookings for April, May and June this year 😡😡😡😡 been waiting for 2 months just for them to tell me no!
Seeing what our other options are, seems like looking at another venue under another council might be an option... complete step backwards but can't deal with Bedford Borough any longer!
