Registrars

Jasmine, 15 February, 2023 at 07:36 Posted on Planning 1 1

Hello! I'm planning to get married June this year and in the stages of booking our venue. Found a venue we love, which has available our preferred date. However the local registrar doesn't have the same date available.
Can we hire an 'independent' registrar to legally marry us on our preferred date, or can this only be a registrar from the local council? I've researched and know you can get a Celebrant but we don't want that. Any help would be appreciated!

You can only get legally married if the venue is licensed with their local authority and a registrar from that same local authority performs the ceremony. If you want to legally get married at your venue then you will need to find a different date where a registrar is available. Or you could have a legal ceremony in a registry office on another day and have a friend/family member lead a ceremony at your venue.
Something else to consider when booking a wedding with only 4 month's notice, is giving notice. You need to give notice with the local authority where you live at least a month before you get married. Depending on the registry office, it could take you a few months to get an appointment. It might be worth checking with your local office that they would be able to see you in time.
