Registry office marriage and separate ceremony on the same day

Louise, 26 February, 2021 at 23:36 Posted on Planning 0 3
Hi everyone, this is my first time posting. ?

I'd love to get married at my parents house (or rather in their big country garden)... However currently it would not be a legal marriage. So we're thinking of a registry office wedding with just close family followed by a ceremony by a celebrant and reception at the house.

Is it doable to have the legal marriage at about 10:00 in town about 20 minutes away and then ceremony followed by reception at 2:30ish on the same day?
I'm really hoping that the law which is due to be reviewed this year changes and we can legally get married at home.... If that is the case how easy would it be to change the registrar booking from AM to PM on a Saturday in July next year?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated! ??

Yes doable on the same day but its going to be a lot of work for you. Most of my couples who do it tend to leave a week between.

It may not be as simple as of changing from AM to PM because at least in my local area there are those that do to location weddings and those that do the in house ones. So it may not be a case of just changing AM to PM as you will need the location registrars to be available for you and they may be already booked up especially a Saturday in July .

From what I can remember over the last 10 years the GOV have been talking about relaxing the restrictions on where you can get married (uk ) so don't plan too much on being allowed to get married in a private garden any time soon. Even if the review gos ahead any changes wont happen until next year ( my opinion )

That's really helpful input, thank you Bill.

I know the discussion about relaxing the law has been going on forever, but I read a BBC article saying there was a renewed push with the knock on of covid delays... But its been such a wild ride of a year, that who knows! Which is why I don't want to plan for that, just hope for it by next summer! Knowing it would likely be a different registrar is very useful though!
I run academic events for work, so hoping that will come in handy to run the event, but might be being too ambitious for one day as I don't want to feel like I'm working too much! We just really like the idea of all being on one special day!
Luckily still have time before I can book at the registry office so can think about it a bit more!

I'd say book your registrars first as they tend to be less flexible than a Celebrant. Many Celebrants (myself included) are keeping everything crossed that the law changes in England soon to bring us into line with Scotland.

Do your research and chat with a few Celebrants to find the one who fits with your style best. We're all different! Some are Humanists and will only perform Humanist ceremonies, whereas others like myself are Independent Civil Celebrants who will create a bespoke ceremony which is all about you! I'd also add that trained Celebrants who hold the Level 3 Diploma in Family and Naming Celebrancy would be a great place to start!

    Best of luck!
