Return flights to America - Flying in and out of different airports

Evil Yoda, 27 May, 2008 at 12:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

My H and are planning a road trip along Route 66, starting in Chicago and ending in Vegas (veering off slightly near the end!)

We want to fly in to Chicago and out of Vegas. Is there anyway of booking this as a 'return' flight rather than 2 one way flights? I've just been browsing at flights to Chicago and a return is a similar price to a one way flight.

We did this on our honeymoon (flew into Seattle and flew back out of New york). We booked through trailfinders and they got quite a good deal - no more expensive than a return from Seattle if I remember correctly as we were using the same airline. May be worth getting a quote from trailfinders or you can do it through expedia if you go to the flights only and choose the 'multiple destinations' option. Good luck, it sounds like a fab holiday!

We've had a couple of multi-centre trips to the states, so the transatlantic flights have been from different parts of the country.

We have always booked through the expedia website. They have a function which allows for multi-centre flights (although this may require you to put in a minimum of 3 flights?). But alternately they have a single trip function. When using their multi-centre facility we have always got very very reasonable prices.

OH and I did this for our honeymoon too - we flew into LA and out of San Fran.

We too booked with Trailfinders and they sorted the flights - we got it REALLY cheaply (£180 each return) but this was nearly 3years ago.

Trailfinders were great and sorted it all.

    Thanks both ?

We used trailfinders for our round the world trip and they were very good so will try them.

I didn't know that abut Expedia so will also try them.

It won't be until next year, but I'm at home and it's raining so I'm planning!

    Wow! That is cheap.

Did you book it quite far in advance?

We did london to san francisco, then vegas to NY, then NY to london. I'm pretty sure we found the flights through expedia and it lets you put in a trip like that (ie with gaps). We got the two transatlantic legs through ba at £300 per person for both bits.

Most flight search engines (orbitz, expedia etc.) allow you to do this, and so does BA (at least the US version) - you just have to select the multi-city option before entering your origina nd destination.

As long as you are going to the US and back it probably won't be a lot more than a normal round trip.

    Hi,

We drove Route 66 last September. We flew into Chicago and out of LA (we also detoured to Las Vegas). We booked through Thompsons. They also booked all our accomodation for us. We travelled with two small children so didnt want to risk having no where to stay.

If you have any questions about Route 66 feel free to ask.

We booked it in the January, and flew out in November, so about 10months in advance.

But this was before all the fuel increases etc and during the January sales.

We did a flydrive (coast of California, through national parks to vegas for our HM,flew into San fran, the on to San diego, then coming back it Las Vegas via LA

We got quotes from all sorts of people, trailfinders, expedia, contacting airlines and hotels directly, but by far the cheapest and most flexible were Thomas Cook signature

    We'd probably book fairly early.

I hadn't considered Thomas Cook Signature so will check them out as well ?

As long as you stick to the same airline and class, most, if not all advance purchase fares are combinable with an open jaw. Which means that you can fly into one airport and out of another.

Tthere are some exceptions based on the milage of the 'ground' leg (the open jaw leg must not be longer than the shortest flown leg) but Chicago and Las Vegas will be fine.

Damn, I was going to tell you about Expedia, but I've been beaten to it! H and I flew to Madrid, got the train to Barcelona and flew home from there using Expedia's multi-trip thingy, and it was indeed reasonable and a thing of good.

EY, thanks for suggesting Croatia on my holidays thread the other day, I've done more research and it looks like our ideal holiday spot. ?

    Thanks for explaining that Michpuss.

You're welcome Tulip. Have a fab time. I'd love to go there one day.
