Right....Slimming World...what are people's experiences?

MrsShark, 10 May, 2011 at 12:46 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hello Hitchers,

I had a bit of a tantrum last night as, despite spending the last few months working out at least 4 times a week and being pretty good with what I am eating, I still don't feel like I am losing the weight I want to be losing.

The crux of it is I want to lose another two stone before my wedding in September (and also for long-term health reasons), and have worked out that, factoring in that my final dress alteration will be done 2-3 weeks before, I have 14 weeks (including this week) to do it in - a healthy 2lbs a week.

I tried Dukan just before Christmas....it made me sick of the sight of eggs. And I love eggs. I have also been following the Holford GL Diet, which is pretty good but just doesn't seem to be getting me the results quickly enough....I think I will follow this once I have lost the weight as my weight has remained stable whilst following it, but just need something sensible to shift poundage. Crash diets just don't work for me as I go into self-sabotage mode!

Sooooo I know a few of you have tried and are still doing Slimming World so just wondered if you would recommend it? I have never done anything like that before but it looks like you get more from actually going to the meetings rather than just doing the online bit.....any advice would be appreciated!

I lost a stone and a half in about 7 months by doing it half-heartedly. I have fallen off the wagon in the past couple of months and have put a couple of pounds back on (but I have been eating like an ox).

I'm now back on the bandwagon as I have less than a year to the wedding and I want to lose at least another stone. I'm just about into a 'normal' weight range now so I find the weight is coming off slower.

It definitely works better if you stay to class. It can be a bit of a bind and somewhat irritating but the weight does come off better than doing it on your own or online.

It is definitely a really easy diet - no weighing really. Just stick up on 'free' foods and eat as much as you want! I find my major downfall is red wine - you are allowed alcohol but it is quite high in 'syns'. I love red wine...

Hey!! i started end of feb and have lost nearly 2 stone and honestly, i do little exercise!!! i go to the group to get weighed, dont actually stay!!

I eat so much more now then i did before and am never hungry. its not a diet its a lifestyle change in the way u eat, its what u eat with what that helps break down the foods etc

Id do it, but go to the group...you get stickers and certificates for osing certain amounts fo weight which as silly as it sounds, does spur you on!!

It does work if you stick to it.

Ive lost 30lb since July last year - its been slow but to be honest I have took weeks totally off plan & put on about 3 times. I would like another half stone off for wedding & then another 3 after that - i dont know how realistic that is with 7 weeks to go to my wedding day!

You really do have to eat your super speed foods if you want to lose weight every week ie most fruit & vege.

Buts ita very do-able diet, loads of meals you can eat that your family/ OH will eat as well which is important & makes life easier.

    I would def join & give it a go.x

I joined in January and lost almost 2 stone by late March. And that's with pretty much no exercise other than my usual amount of walking. I've been really half-hearted with it since then because at the rate I was losing weight, I would have lost too much for my dress to fit even with maximum alterations. The biggest thing that occurred to me is how much it's changed the way I look at food, so nowadays eating properly isn't an effort whereas it always used to be.

My lovely mum has lost 3 and a half stone on SW and swears by it. I have tried it and lost weight really quickly but I struggle to stick to it. The main problem is that because you can eat LOADS of food, if you don't stick to the plan, you tend to need loads of food to feel full and if it's the wrong food, you can pile on more pounds than you started with!

I lost 2st 2 years ago with Slimming World and would recommend it to anybody. I joined in Feb and reached target by July, steadily losing weight most weeks. I'm veggie so I just did green days all the time which suited me as after a couple of weeks I had all the "rules" memorised and I could just follow it without having to refer to the books - it did become second nature. It didn't feel at all faddy, and it was easy enough to find stuff to eat without feeling hungry. I used to save my syns for a weekend and then have chocolate and wine and sometimes a takeaway.

I have kept the weight off since give or take a few pounds - I put half a stone back on over Christmas but that was because I was ill, then I just followed SW again for a few weeks and shifted the excess.

I went to the meetings and found them helpful for keeping on track. Also it was just nice to socialise.

It's about as perfect as a diet can get imo. You can eat carbs, and some are unrestricted. You can also eat until you feel content - no calorie counting for most foods. It does take a bit of planning with the shopping, to ensure you stick to it properly, but there is not much that is off limits, which suits me very well.

I just started last week - first weigh in tomorrow! It's too close to my wedding now to make any difference, really, but even if I can drop 1/2 a stone it will make me feel more confident on the inside, IYKWIM

I haven't felt hungry at all this week - it even fitted in (a bit) with my hen night, as we went to a japanease place and had rice, and chicken stir fry (and lots of wine, which was rather off-plan, but...). not sure how much I have lost this week, due to hen night excess, but it might be a little bit?

I think it's easier to understand that Weight Watchers, and, unlike weight watchers, the emphasis is on all the free food you can eat, so you never feel like you have to go hungry...

I joined Slimming World almost a couple of years ago now, and did lose a lot of weight (about 2 stone) whilst on it. The weight has mostly come back on now after I left but I still remember the basic rules and I know it works for me... I have a feeling that with the summer of 2010 that I had, I would have put on a LOT more weight if it wasn't for remembering some of the SW rules!

I would say though that if you aren't particularly big to start with, losing 2lbs a week may work out a bit too ambitious. I don't know how big you are and I don't like to assume! But in my experience at group, the women who were size 16-ish and over could lose 2lbs a week, but if you were smaller than that to start with, then weight losses tended to be less, more like 1lb a week or 1.5lbs a week at most, with some weeks where you'd lose less or just stay the same. Just wouldn't want you to be disappointed, so I thought I'd mention that.

It is a fantastic diet for the long-term though. You are allowed treats which means if you're craving chocolate, you can have some, so you're less likely to build up your cravings and then go on a massive binge. I always felt full and since it is a fairly flexible diet, going for a home-cooked meal wasn't a nightmare. I even got my mum onto using FryLight oil!

I am interested in using slimming world diet just to eat healthily. I am not overweight but get a bit of stomach sometimes probably due to bread, not sure if there is a minimum weight requirement. Can anyone confirm as I don't want to turn up and get turned away ?

You need to want to lose at least 7 pounds, and losing that would have to keep you within a healthy BMI. So if you didn't want to lose anything at all I don't think they'd let you go.
