Rigid Sigmoidoscopy

Ann-Louise, 4 April, 2008 at 07:49 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

Has anyone had one of these done? If so, how painful or uncomfortable was it? Also, did they give you any kind of anaesthetic?

Thanks.

Not me personally but my Mum has had loads. She was given valium I think and it fair near knocked her out. She said you can feel it but you're so whacked out it doesn't hurt. She did say it can hurt afterwards though but more discomfort than pain (IYSWIM).

Meant to say - hope it goes ok!

Thanks for that. It's my H having it, not me. Think he's worried about having something put up there!

My mum had a full colonoscopy done last year (goes up further than a sigmoidoscopy) and said it wasn't painful just weird and uncomfortable. She had hers done in Spain and all the way through, the nurses chatted with her in Spanish and kept saying stuff like "Tell me how to say 'hello how are you' in English" to keep her distracted!?
I wondered how your H was getting on.?

Glad he's being seen quickly. Apart from any biopsies they take, you should both have a good idea how he is straight after the appointment which would be a relief, I'm sure. Best of luck, hope you get some reassurance soon.?

I didn't realise they would tell us anything at the appt. Thanks for the info.

The did at my mum's, and as they'll be able to get a good look at what's going on, they could tell her straight away she didn't have anything worrying up there.?

I had one done and didn't have the sedation option and was fine (I'm a total wuss, I rejected sedation on not liking injections and wanting to go home as soon as)

They let me look at what they were doing on the screen which was kind of cool and also distracting! Also every time they took a biopsy it made my stomach rumble.

Tell him he'll feel all bloated after and need a good fart other that that there isn't much to worry about and it doesn't really hurt just feels weird. At first it feels like having a poo backwards!
