Road crossing and animal names - Numbnuts?

KJB, 12 August, 2008 at 11:17 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

My advanced driving observer was tested herself during my lesson at the weekend to become a senior observer. The examiner asked her a question which was "There are 6 types of road crossings named after animals. What are they and how do they work?"

I knew zebra and pelican. She added in puffin (I've never heard of it) she was flummoxed by the other 3.

I'm just off to google and will report back, but wondered if anyone else knew.

NN - do I recall correctly that road / driver safety is your bag? Have you any ideas?

Pegasus crossing - is one designed with a push button at the height for horse and rider. They put one in in our town a couple of years ago.

So you both knew more than me. I didn't realise puffin or toucan crossings had a different name...I just refer to them all as pelican crossings.

I had no idea about the crossing names either.

How are you getting on with the driver training KJB? is it RoSPA or IAM you are doing?

I'm doing IAM, mainly because a couple of friends have done it so knew how it worked, and also as they just have a pass or fail mark as I'd be annoyed if I just got a 'bronze' from Rospa.....yet I don't think I'm good enough to go for gold. Maybe this harks back to being 2 marks off a 2:1...I'd rather have just had a pass or fail then! LOL

I'm getting on OK. It's interesting and I think my driving has improved. Some bits I don't agree with, so will stop doing as soon as I pass! Eg not steering and changing gear at the same time...OK most of the time but when going right at a r-a-b from stationary, you can't change gear until your wheels are straight....so you're roaring round in first gear.

That and having to have a proper grip on the gear stick are the two things which annoy me most. Most of the rest of it I'm happy with though.

I did the RoSPA one as part of my companies increasing obsession with health and safety. I got a silver but absolutely hated hated hated every second of it.

The way I want to drive, and the things I think about as a result of this are totally out of sync with what the were trying to instill in me.

soooooo frustrating when I know how best to make a car stable in a corner yet am being told I have got the wrong technique and need to adjust acordingly. FWIW, I very rarely do two things at once. I am either braking, accelerating or changing gear and at r-a-b's I would short shift into second to get round.

If you can take a few things that improve your general awareness, then I guess it is worth doing with of course the added bonus of reduced insurance premiums

KJB I did the DIAmond advanced driving course and test 10 years ago, and found it invaluable in getting rid of bad habits and has intstilled in me a greater awareness of safety and proper driving, I think everyone should give an advance course a go to see just how many bad habits they have.

Fact sheets are essential tools for presenting key information in a clear and concise manner. Whether used in business, healthcare, or education, fact sheets help convey complex topics quickly and efficiently. They typically include critical details, statistics, and summaries, making them ideal for decision-makers and the general public. Fact sheets can be printed or digital, allowing easy distribution and access. Organizations use them to highlight products, services, or policies, ensuring transparency and awareness. By using fact sheets effectively, businesses and institutions can streamline communication, enhance understanding, and improve engagement with their audience.
