Rotas for Shift Work... How much notice?

VJ, 22 August, 2008 at 12:46 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0

I've googled this but can't seem to come up with the answer and was hoping one of you lovely people would know?! ?

OH is a chef and works in shifts with his colleagues. I asked him today what shift he is doing on Monday (as I want to plan our bank holiday) and he said the rota hasn't even been done yet! It is like this every single week, with him not knowing what shifts he has got until the day before they start. They also change the rota without telling anybody and if you turn up for the wrong shift, you get in trouble!

I think this is absolutely ludicrous, and he has asked me to have a look if there is any law to state how much notice you have to be given for shift work and for changes to the rota?

Thanks in Advance!

I'm fairly certain that there isn't a law relating to it, particularly with shift changes. Put it this way, we can turn up to work expecting to do a 1 night trip to New York and be sent on a 3 night trip to Antigua !!!!

I would say this is something that needs to be addressed with management - we generally get about 2 weeks notice (but then get given a month at a time, so 6 weeks notice for the end of the month IYSWIM) and that can feel it's not enough.
