Said yes to the dress....! Now, bridesmaids dresses?!

Anonbride, 7 February, 2022 at 17:01 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 7

I chose my dress this Saturday!! I'm absolutely in love with it and so excited to wear it on my big day (no photos of me in it, as my boutique advised me not to given that they've heard a few too many stories of the photo accidentally making it's way round to too many guests... or worse FH! And my mum is also wanting the dress to be a surprise on the day so that's one more person to avoid seeing it!) but it's an off the shoulder, lacy, floaty boho number by Madi Lane Smiley heart

So of course, now I'm onto the next thing! I didn't want to even think about the bridesmaids dress style until I knew what mine would be, but now I do so now I am!

Do you think bridesmaids dresses should follow the same neckline/shape as the bride's dress? Or should they be completely different? Or is there another way to complement without being too similar? I'm not sure how much I should be thinking about whether they 'go' with my dress...

Also, how far in advance is everyone planning on deciding on bridesmaid outfits? I'm over a year away from my wedding, but went shopping early after all the talk of wedding dress orders under a year in advance being charged as 'rush' orders, and I know my dress will be altered in the weeks leading up to my wedding so I don't have to worry about maintaining exactly this size. But for the bridesmaids I'm planning on saving a bit of money and buying off the rack from somewhere nice but high street like Oasis or maybe Coast - do you think I should be looking this summer or waiting until early next year? My wedding's July 2023...

What's everyone else going for?

Congratulations on finding the one!! I got my BM dresses fairly soon after mine, we got the Mischa dress from Monsoon, they are beautiful and have different colours which worked for our scheme. I thing it is better if style is slightly different to yours so doesn't look too samey if that makes sense and you stand out, as you should as the bride! . You can get them whenever, and If you look now and find ones you all love then I would get them, but be mindful of their circstances as my MOH is now pregnant so need to rebuy her dress bigger and have taken in but can't return the original! Go have a girly day and see what happens!

Congratulations! We’re having a shorter engagement and had 6 months to plan a wedding and I had to get my dress “off the rack” as most shops wanted 10 plus months to order in so I’m glad you got yours sorted in advance!
I got my bridesmaid dresses sorted about a month after. I’ve gone with same colour different styles. There’s no right or wrong with bridesmaid dress styles so they don’t have to have the same neckline or match so I would recommend going shopping with or without bridesmaids and having a look at styles and you’ll know what ones you love and don’t love! Then go from there. Perhaps purchase bridesmaid dresses 10-12 months before wedding. I told my bridesmaids that if they lost or gained weight closer to wedding they could just arrange to get their dress altered so there was less pressure on them to maintain weight

Thanks Charlotte!! Ooh Monsoon is a good shout - I'll add that to my list! My gut reaction was that I wanted them be different to my dress, but because I've not been to many weddings myself I panicked about whether that would look 'wrong' Smiley xd

I guess it's a balance with getting them far enough in advance that you don't panic that it's too close to the wedding and you don't have anything, but not so far in advance that people's sizes might change too much... are you paying for the new dress for your MOH?

This is exactly why I went dress shopping so early! So many people thought I was mad but I've been hearing so much on these forums about anything under than a year being a 'rush' order!

This is great advice, thank you! Maybe I'll see if my bridesmaids want to go on an outing this summer, so hopefully shops will have in options for the right season... Are you paying for any alterations they need or is that something they'll be responsible for?

It is your day so you do you, there is no right or wrong, as long as you are happy with the look then that is all that matters. My MOH immediately offered to pay for the new dress and offered for me to sell her other one, I said she can keep it for herself after the baby as I had budgeted and paid for it so as long as she covers the cost of the new one it is all fine by me. I was more happy that she is pregnant as they have had 4 miscarriages over two years, so I just knew it would happen as soon as I asked her to be my MOH!!

Aww that's lovely she's pregnant! I really don't want my bridesmaids to feel like they can't get pregnant or have to maintain their weight - I've just gone over budget with my dress so really need to keep to budget with the bridesmaids haha

Your Madi Lane dress sounds dreamy! Bridesmaid dresses don’t need matching necklines. Soft boho styles in complementary hues will complement your look perfectly without clashing. Shop this summer for off-the-rack picks. You’ll lock in sizes before stock runs out and avoid last-minute stress.
