Saturday vs Sunday weddings

Eleisha, 1 January, 2021 at 21:26 Posted on Planning 0 9
Hey all
I just got engaged and we’re starting to think about dates. We were looking at potentially Easter weekend 2023. I’m unsure whether to pick Saturday or Easter Sunday. What do you guys think? I would ideally like a wedding over a bank holiday & Easter seems the cheapest time to do it. We’re not particularly religious & are unlikely to have a church ceremony. Does anybody have experience of an Easter wedding?

    Firstly congrats !

We are easter holidays 2022, we booked Monday 11th April for a couple of reasons..

    1. Monday venue hire price £2750, Saturday hire price was £6970. We are the ones paying for it so we chose 2 days later for under half the price.

    2. We have neices and nephews who we want to be there so we chose the easter holidays.

    3. Choosing a week day will determine who really wants to be there as they will book a day or 2 off work.

    4. Saturday is very much a non-day for a lot of people so all will come as they aren't usually doing anything.

Any more questions feel free to ask xx

My cousin got married at Easter a few years back and went for the Saturday so that people travelling out of area could turn it into a long weekend if they wanted to. I'd say the Saturday is probably the best date for that reason, and also because if any of your guests are Christian, Easter Sunday is potentially a day when they would not be able to attend. It would also be worth checking prices at your chosen venue and also with your wedding photographer - we married midweek and our wedding photographer was less than half of what he would have cost at a weekend!

Yes mid week weddings can be cheaper as can Friday or Sunday but generally speaking bank holiday week ends will attract a near normal price especially the Easter Friday and Sunday. The Easter week end is also the first to get booked up along with the August Bank Holiday. If any guests want to attend an Easter Sunday service then if your wedding is not really early then they should be able to do both. Depending on the strength of their faith then Good Friday may be more difficult for them.

I have Shot weddings in Churches on Easter Sunday after the Normal Easter Sunday worship has taken place, but it very much depends on the Vicar as they may feel that they are too busy with Easter to be able to give you their fullest attention.

It depends a lot on your guests. I think a Sunday before the bank holiday mo day is pretty much the same as a Saturday unless you have a lot of guests who usually work weekends (in which case there will be competition for leave) or have a long way to travel (in which case it will be more expensive). I went to a wedding we had to fly to on Easter Tuesday. It was a massive pain (getting leave, paying for bank/school holiday flights) but everyone still came! I would be very happy with a bank holiday Sunday wedding as a guest.

Meant to include: my brother is having a bank holiday wedding which includes dinner on the Saturday, wedding on the Sunday and brunch on the Monday. Should be fab, and most guests are Monday-Friday workers so it’s convenient for almost everyone!

Ours is a Saturday (which nothing either side, other than a reduced rate for the hotel, so hopefully lots of guests at breakfast the next day).

Aww your brothers wedding weekend sounds amazing! Hope you have fun. I think you’re right won’t really be much difference between the days apart from the Sunday being slightly cheaper.
Hope everything goes well with your big day.

Just wanted to throw my two penneth in as we had the exact same dilemma. We opted for Easter weekend and have booked our venue for the whole weekend so they gave us a choice to have the wedding on the Saturday or the Sunday. After going backwards and forwards we went for the Saturday as it allows people lots of time to travel, and an extra day to recover after the weekend with the bank holiday Monday.

We didn't find any price difference in the two days - bank holiday Sundays are generally treated as Saturdays so there was no financial benefit for us getting married on the Sunday. We actually found some suppliers do not work / open on Easter Sunday and we didn't want our options to be limited. That, and having the extra day of recovery / relaxation after the wedding is what eventually swung it for us! Hope this is helpful.

Edit: I can't offer any advice about the church as we are not having a church ceremony, but I would imagine it's easier to getting married in a Church on a Saturday rather than Easter sunday.

Can I ask how far in advance did you book your date? I’ve been told bank holidays go first so looking for a rough idea when I realistically need to decide on a venue?

Of course! We booked our venue about 22 months in advance. We knew we wanted a 2022 date and when we enquired it was the only bank holiday weekend left, so the decision was made for us! Both May bank holiday weekends and August had gone months before we booked, so you are right in thinking they are high demand.
