Sausage & Mash - yes or no?

Amethyst, 26 April, 2009 at 19:34 Posted on Planning 0 37

Well we had a really productive weddingy weekend in the Suffolk sunshine! Met with 2 photographers, a caterer and also had a room tour of a hotel where we think we will stay for the weekend of our wedding.

When we met the caterer we told him that ideally we would like sausage and mash for our main course - it is one of our favourite meals and I know it will suit all our guests from 2 to 85. Something simple and tasty - would want good quality Suffolk sausages for example.

The caterer can do this but he did say that in his own opinion he doesn't think it is the type of dish appropriate for weddings. People have spent (in some cases) a lot of money to attend the wedding, travelled some distance etc. and might think they deserved a 'better' meal - like a really good quality cut of meat, roast potatoes, veg etc.

This has thrown me somewhat as we were pretty set on s&m (!) but of course we don't want to appear stingy or disappoint the guests! I've been to a wedding before where s&m was served and I wasn't aware of any complaints!

Anyway, sausage & mash for wedding meal - yes or no?

I think in'the old days' people woulad expect meat and 2 veg but nowdays anything goes!!

I love love love S&M and onion gravy and would be happy if i got that at a wedding and definaty wouldnt be dissapointed and think i deserve more!!

People have all sorts these days like fish and chips, curries,,, i think sausage and mash is now quite popular

Personally I wouldn't serve that and I don't like it either but you know your guests and if you think that would go down well then have it. Would you have options?

Hahaha! So you would be OK if you went to a wedding an this is what they served you? You wouldn't think they were being cheap or unimaginative?

    How was your nearly-there-weddingy-weekend?

We are having sausage and mash, with caramelised onion gravy. Yum!!

Most normal people like sausage and mash, and if they don't think it's good enough for a wedding then it's tough!! They don't have to come! And we are having a second option of chicken.

    Serious reply now.

My answer is still "Yes please". If it's good enough for Kate Winslet....

My friend had sausage and mash at her wedding and it went down a storm. Like you said, if you get good quality Suffolk sausages I doubt anybody will complain, and I'm sure the chef can posh it up a bit if you feel it necessary. It's your bl**dy wedding at the end of the day!

BTW - don't let any of your caterers try to sell you sausages from "Jimmy's Farm". From what I've heard they're very average, especially for the price. There are much better bangers in Suffolk.

We haven't decided on our menu yet but my H2B & I are seriously considering have bangers & mash too! So I'd say definetely yes!! Its not on the menu's given to us by the venue but the events coordinator did say we could have whatever we wanted including fish & chips so I don't think its too much of a jump. Besides I imagine you'll have 'fancy' sausages & mash.

Hope this helps & I'm intrigued to hear what others have to say as I hadn't considered that guests may not consider it a 'weddingy' meal.

I think it's your wedding and ignore that bloke.

S+M is always fun (hahhaha) especially if you get good quality meat...

Plus its v. trendy and delicious. I prefer it to a roast. (god I feel another innuendo coming on)

Seriously, go for it. Ignore anyone who tells you otherwise - you don't need to *impress your guests* in that way.

Sounds to me like your caterer is trying to get you to spend more money.

Stick to what you want. We are having our reception at a real posh restaurant and sausage and mash was top of the menu!

    WE are having Newmarket sausages

I think it really depends on the style of your wedding, how formal you and your friends are and what sort of things are on your gift list. An expensive gift list at the same time as sausages and mash may well make you look a bit stingy I'm afraid.

If your wedding is informal and your friends are casual then I think it would be lovely. Its certainly a dish I'd enjoy. Ideally followed by chocolate sponge pudding.

I went to a wedding a couple of years ago where they served sausage and mash (was about to abbreviate that but though better of it!) as the main course. TBH it seemed a little odd, but as I love sausage an mash I was fine. I think the MOB was a little embarrassed by how 'common' the food was, but overall everbody enjoyed it and I know our table were pleased just to get something of subtance inside them to soak up the to-be-consumed alcohol!

The background behind why they served it was the bride chose the starters and dessert and the groom, who is a bit of a fussy eater, chose the main. It's the only wedding where I can remember what all 3 courses were!

Not too bad thank you (not as productive as yours by the sound of it).

Had my hair re-blonded and trimmed yesterday, then went to my mum's in the afternoon (dad was out on H2B's stag day) and had a dress rehearsal as up until yesterday I hadn't tried on my dress, bolero and jewellery together. Got to go back for another bolero fitting on Tuesday (seamstress is mum's neighbour) which is a pain in the arse as rents live 20 miles away, but was really pleased with how everything went together, and my jewellery just looked perfect. Thankfully, even with camel-like water retention, my dress still fits.

Spent today finishing my postbox and making thank you cards for the parents, MOH and BM and whining about my period pain (it worked though as H2B is currently doing my ironing while I'm hitching ?).

Will continue sorting out my honeymoon clothes when I've finished on here.

    Thanks all!

We shall stick to our guns then re: s&m. As it is a separate caterer to the venue, the choice of what we can have is absolutely huge - he is going to provide us with some options of 'home comfort' type food including s&m now he has met us and understands what we want. I did wonder if he was trying to get us to spend more money. Apart from that we really got on well with him & were impressed with his operation.

Kelly - this was Chimneys by the way. And thanks for the tip off re: Jimmy's sausages - I had forgotten his farm is in Suffolk!

Purrfect Gems - I can't off the top of my head think of anyone it wouldn't suit (bar veggies!) but I am sure - like with anything - some won't like it. Just strikes me as something that is OK for little ones, OK for pregnant ladies, OK for the much older guests (my grandad won't eat anything in 'funny' sauces etc).

Stupidgirl - Have you seen the chain of S&M restaurants in London?!?

This is why we chose it, as it's a good all rounder. Anyway I think anyone who says it looks cheap has obviously never had sausage and mash at a real posh pricey restaurant!

2 of the poshest restaurants in my area (including our venue) do sausage and mash.

Wow must have been lovely to see the total outfit all together for the first time! Shame to be running about this week sorting out bolero but at least you know it will fit on the day!

Hope your water retention dies down soon! Better to have it now then next week or on the honeymoon!!! [

I say yes - i don't think it would be stingy. i can't remember what i've eaten at most of the weddings i've been to, it's more important to me to have a great time as opposed to having a gourmet meal! at the end of the day, i'm only eating to soak up the booze <bluewater is a lush icon>

I just asked my h2b who likes S&M and he said he'd think 'it was different' but would enjoy it. I'm a very fussy eater and hate sausages and gravy so put the two together.....hence the reason I wouldn't serve it at my own wedding but it's nothing to do with the fact I don't think it is not good enough. We are having steak pie for the pub type grub eaters and Chicken stuffed with haggis with a whiskey cream sauce for the others but both are still alcohol soaking up food!

Point noted re: gift list! Plan to make sure there are lots of things on there that are reasonably priced! We are not really going either for formal or informal. I guess everyone will be dressed up (me more dressed up than ever before) but definitely want a friendly, laid back vibe, no standing on ceremony etc etc!

Good call on the choc pudding! It is an autumn wedding so I think that will suit!

My SIL and BIL had sausages and mash for their wedding. My SIL is a vegetarian so didn't want to have to have 'the alternative' on her own wedding day so they did a 'roast dinner' but rather than a roasted joint they did different kinds of sausages, different flavours, fillings etc. It worked really well. Very different ad everybody was stuffed!!

If you want sausage and mash have it... it was an option on our venue's menu when we got married and we considered it and probably would have done it if SIL and BIL hadn't done it before us.

Purrfect Gems - they sound like great choices!

I won't be eating the s&m either as am veggie! I guess that is why it is important for me to canvass opinion as it isn't something I can experience to decide on for myself! Though it is H2B's top choice. I'd be very happy with some sort of veggie sausage option - not sure if the caterer will go for that though. Whatever I have though would be of a similar - pub grub style. Though hopefully more like gastropub! To soak up all the vast quantities of booze we will be serving of course!

    YES!

What Kelly said - A few valentines days ago I had Jimmy's "Love Sausage," and mash cooked for me. NO JOKE! It was nice, but like Kelly said, they're pretty average, you're just paying for the name.

I know my OH would be over the moon with it, I would be too. Actually all 4 of us would eat it!

My personal opinion is people spend far too much time stressing over keeping their guests happy rather than themselves

I totally agree! We decided to have chicken stuffed with haggis as its something we both love. Im aware a lot of people might not like haggis or want to try it but we decided that as its our day, we'd have what we really wanted to eat.

Sausage and mash sounds fab by the way! Friends of mine cooked me sausage and mash for my birthday dinner last year and we had it with champagne. Lovely

Love the idea of sausage & mash! ? How about having something like thai fish cakes as an alternative to the S&M? Seems very gastropubby but should be reasonable in price as well ? xxx

I personally don't like potatoes so wouldn't go for it, but thats just me being a bit odd. As a concept I think its absolutely fine, why not especially if its H2B's fave. Majority of people would love it I think.
