Sax Player at our wedding...anyone had one?

ShellG, 22 March, 2012 at 12:07 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hi, I need help!!

The short background story is, we provisionally booked the venues resident pianist 18 months ago, tried several times to call him, left messages - finally got a call back last week where he told us he is already booked for the other wedding taking place on the same day, recommended a lady instead but I didn't like the sound of her voice etc. He was meant to call back the day after which he didn't, we left a few more messages and heard nothing back from him...

So we have come to the decision we do not want to give him our money anyway and OH suggested a sax player instead. Found someone online that is free on the date of our wedding....but I'm just not sure.

I have never heard a sax player live before, not sure whether the music will be to overpowering for our ceremony - hoping you could offer me some advice if you have had one at your wedding or heard a sax player at a wedding before??

I need to make a decision soon so I can send my song choices back to the registrar

Thanks in advance!!

Another vote for a Sax player here too! I'm a massive Kenny G fan! They are such a good sound for a wedding. It's probably the only instrument I wish I could play! Our daughter had a jazz trio for their wedding and they played the sax in between the other instruments and they were brill. I don't know their names but they play regularly at Center Parcs. Everyone loved them.

I'm glad you like the idea - think I just needed the re-assurance that it would be ok to have.

Would you think it would be to loud to play in the ceremony?

How big is your room, and what sort of stuff will they be playing?

I love the sax as well, but it can be quite loud, and if you're in a relatively small room it could overpower conversation during dinner. Also, will they be bringing backing tracks? Sax on its own might be a bit...empty?

Thanks for your reply, I am going to ask about the backing tracks. We are planning to have him playing whilst we are having the photos taken and canapes in the grounds (supposing the weather is nice). Sat down last night and decided not to have him for the ceremony as I do just think it will be to loud

Hi I usually get asked to play sax with backing tracks or live pianist at the reception after the ceremony as then guests are relaxed and it makes great background music without being too overpowering Smiley smile

    Hi there,

I'm a professional saxophonist. I've only just seen this post and just wanted to make some suggestions to anyone booking a solo instrument that's not a piano/harp/similar...

Ask about backing tracks - some people work with them and some don't. Check on the quality - are they live band tracks or synth? Some synth tracks sound ridiculously fake!

Be very clear on what style you want - ie send them some example songs on youtube/spotify. NB there are MANY eras of 'jazz' so get the style you want!

Ask about what audio equipment they might use. If it's a huge venue they might consider using a radio mic (in which case they need a PA as well) but this usually isn't necessary as sound carries well in churches or big rooms!

Saxophones aren't particularly loud (ask them to play more quietly if necessary!) but the tonality cuts through which is why they seem louder than other instruments, such as violins.

Saxophones sound great with DJs if you want to book them for the evening as well - it really adds something special to the night!

You can ask the solo saxophone to 'wander' round the drinks reception while they play or set them up in a corner.

Solo saxophone is hard. There is obviously no harmony instrument supporting them so they need to be able to give a strong account of the songs. It can sound brilliant but is a very specific sound. I've had problems with corporate clients in the past where they didn't understand what they had actually booked. As a solo player I cannot sound like a jump jive band - it's just not possible!

Hope this helps everyone Smiley smile

Saxophone player could work quite well. I know house dance Sax music and playing alongside a DJ is quite trendy at the moment, but it doesn't have to be all modern dance tunes. We had the guys from Dublin DJs playing Sax and DJ at our wedding. What worked really well for us was the DJ played a wide variety of music from all eras for the crowd. Even better was the saxophonist was capable of jamming along to music from 60s,70s,80s as well as the modern stuff. Try book based on recommendations or even better any open sessions they may have.
