School uniform skirts

haagweg, 10 October, 2008 at 12:45 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

Recently I've seen that most schoolgirls are wearing trousers rather than skirts. I can understand if it's cold then trousers are better, but it still looks odd to me because it's not cold at the moment. I grew up having to wear a pinafore skirt in primary school and then a four gore skirt later in secondary school - sounds very attractive doesn't it ?, with thick tights in the winter. I think it's kind of a pity that that has changed even though my H thinks it's more practical and modest lol. I would probably have worn trousers if they were allowed though so I can see the appeal but I'm glad uniforms were a bit old fashioned and you had no choice in those days.

I wasn't keen on the PE knickers and short skirts though.

Anyone else think the same? or would you have preferred trousers?

I had to wear skirts & blazers.

My Daughter will be a skirt wearing education & they have to be knne length (rules of MrJMP & the Pope)

I would say her uniform is rather strict & old fashioned , just like mine.

My secondary school was skirts only for girls when I started but the girls campaigned relentlessly until in my second/third year we were allowed to wear trousers. I never wore a skirt to school again after that.

Trousers are so much more practical, and still smart, so I think it's a change for the better. I was very self-conscious as a young teenager too and hated having to have my chicken legs on display for all to see.

Funnily enough, these days I prefer skirts to trousers (for formal wear, otherwise it's jeans all the way) and all my interview outfits involve skirts. I just think they suit me better and I don't have to worry about the length (I'm tall and finding trousers that fit well AND are long enough is a nightmare).

My two step daughter's prefer skirst to trousers and I think it looks smarter, especially with the blazer for secondary school. They do have trousers but only wear them when it's a wet day or the skirts are in the wash etc.

We go through so many tights it's unreal! ?

My secondary school uniform was a black watch tartan wool kilt!

I would have worn trousers if I was allowed.

    In my school we had to wear;

A certain skirt, bought from a certain shop,

    Same with the jumper,

    tie & blazer

and only knee length white socks, not rolled down, not short socks, not tights.

For the 1st 2 years, we had a list of around 6 pairs of shoes from clarks given to us, that we had to choose from. No others allowed.

Even the female teachers were not allowed to wear trousers, apart from the P.E teachers.

It's changed now, i have seen on FB that they are now allowed to wear tights.

Befor we moved, my daughter's uniform was a kilt and blazer, open collar bouse, no tie. Now it's black trouser/skirt, no blazer, shirt & tie and horrid marroon jumper. I (and daughter) much prefer the old school's uniform.

By the time i went to upper school trousers were allowed, it was so much more practical. At school there lots of floor sitting, running around and all sorts of stuff. skirts can restrict a bit.

I remember some of the girls ended up showing their pants when trying to sit on the floor, or if we had to stand on a chair to reach something the boys would try and look up! Oh and those boys who used to have great fun lifting girls skirts in the playground.

To be honest, I liked having the choice in upper school. I'd wear a skirt somedays and trouses the others. Just like i do now.

My school uniform was very restrictive, and had to be bought from a particular shop. Although they didn't go as far as stipulating what sort of shoes we had to wear - they were happy as long as they were black, not slip-on and didn't have a heel.

I'd have loved to have worn trousers, as I was unmercifully bullied for having hairy legs (I wasn't allowed to shave them, although my mum never came up with a reason I could understand. The few times I rebelled and shaved my legs, I was grounded at least until it grew back [:'(] - thank gawd I never tried waxing)

My mum is appalled that girls can wear trousers to school now. Mind you, she was shocked the first time I bought a trouser suit to wear for interviews. She clipped a news story out of the paper about a woman who'd successfully sued her employers for discrimination when they told her she couldn't wear trousers, in an effort to persuade me that wearing trousers to an interview would harm my chances.

The skirts in my current school caused a bit of a 'debate' at the end of the summer term. The head announced that it was only a minority of the girls that were wearing skirts (they have the choice of skirt or trousers) and because of the 'failing to wear it at the correct length' it was being considered that we become a trouser uniform school.

We are yet to hear any more on the matter so far this year.

i've heard that a lot of schools have a trouser only uniform so a boy couldn't potentially appeal to the court of human rights to wear skirts...

but that could just be a daily mail-ism ?

I should have added that we're an all girls school anyway. I guess the boys school (right next door) already has a trouser only policy!

I use to wear trousers at secondary school, not all the time but if it was particularly cold.

I remember kicking up a right fuss about wearing gym knickers for PE though as we had a male teacher and he was 'known' for having an eye for the girls. But were told we either wore the Knickers and did PE or given detention after school for a week for every lesson missed.

A few years later he was actually sacked for 'grooming' an under 13.

I much prefer skirts for school uniform as I think they look smarter. The girls can wear trousers at our local high school and they generally look scruffy IMHO, quite possibly because the trousers always seem to be so ill fitting.

I rarely wore trouser suits at work for the same reason. I certainly found it much more difficult to find a suit with a pair of trousers that fit correctly and looked smart than a skirt suit.

we has a pe teacher like that. he took great joy in making the girls do pe in their bra & knickers when they forgot their pe kit.

I don't rember wearing trousers at school but I wouldn't want to have to wear skirts now. I haven't worn one in years (and the last dress was on my wedding day a year ago).

My secondary school had no uniform which I liked at the time.

Primary we had to wear skirts, no trousers allowed.

Obviously Master I is a boy but at his schools the girls wear dresses and then skirts as they get older.

Recently established (in an NI court at least) that in matters of uniform and grooming it is neither sexist nor unreasonable for schools to set differing standards for boys and girls.

My school had a very restrictive uniform with a hideous striped pillowcase affair with patch pockets our hymn books fitted in in summer (to be worn no higher than the knee) and grey kickpleat or box pleat skirts in winter. Now they've changed it to a Home and Away type dress in summer which seems to be worn skimming the arse, not sure about winter. I think trousers are infinitely preferable to arse skimming skirts (not that I'm bitter about having crap legs at all).

In our school there was no choice, the girls had long pleated thick scratchy skirts and the lads had trousers. The skirts had to be below knee length (although by the time we got to third year they were all being rolled up and got progressively shorter as sixth form approached). We had white shirts, long sleeved in winter and short sleeved in summer with a marron tie and grey jumper in the winter.

I reckon girls wear shorter school skirts now than ever i was at school, the teachers seemed to crack down on things like that more when i was there

During my school days we had to wear trousers 365 days a year. Back then we had no option of wearing skirts.
