Scone recipe

digitalskittles, 31 August, 2008 at 20:03 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 27

Well I have decided to teach myself to cook and wanted to start with something simple, scones seemed to be a good idea as it is what children are taught to make in year 7.

I found a recipe on the internet but when i made them the dough was all sticky, I decided to keep going and when I finally baked them (double the time it told me to bake them as they were still gooey) I had a taste and they were overly buttery, H ate them and said they were OK but I didn't like them.

So day one as a domestic goddess in training turned out to be a failure. So after a ramble does anyone have a good recipe for scones?

thanks

Yum. I love scones and, once you get the hang of them, they're so quick and easy to make that you'll be rustling up a batch in minutes. The recipe below makes lovely light fluffy scones. I make them with yoghurt as I've usually got some in the fridge, although they're equally nice made with buttermilk. Both give a nicer texture than plain milk. I've not tried the soured cream option.

    8oz plain flour, sifted
    3 rounded tsp baking powder
    1 oz caster sugar
    1 egg (small)
5 oz plain yoghurt or buttermilk or soured cream
    2 oz butter

    Preheat oven (v important for scones) to Gas Mark 9, 240 C, 475 F.

Sift flour and baking powder together. Rub in butter until mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in sugar. Beat together egg and yoghurt/buttermilk/soured cream and add gradually to dry mixture (if you've used a medium or large egg, you probably won't need all of the liquid) and combine until a soft dough forms. Roll out on a floured board to 1" thickness and cut into rounds (stamp out the scones, don't twist the cutter). Bake for 10-12 minutes in the middle/top of the oven.

Nothing to do with scones but your name always makes me laugh. Is it meant to make me think of chickens' arses? ?

Hooby, your constant picture posting is REALLY wanky ?. it reminds me of a train spotter complete with flask and clipboard ?

    right, proper scone recipe:

    12-15 scones

    150 g salted butter
    600G plain flour
    150 golden caster sugar
    40g baking powder
    280 g sultanas
    190g double cream
    190 g skimmed milk
    a beaten egg for glazing

rub the butter into the flour (i use a food processor)
add the sugar and baking powder and sultanas and mix (with a fork or whatever)
add the cream and mil and mis with a credit card or whatever
lightly dust your surface with flour and turn the dough on to it
press down, then fold in half, then in half again the other way so you have a rough square and leave to rest for 15 mins
roll out to a thickness of about 3-5 cm square
cut into squares and put each one on a cold baking tray
egg wash once, then leave two mins, egg wash again

put the tray into a pre-heated oven at 200 (fan) . check after 15 mins - theyre done in my oven after that time and rise wonderfully. if you dont have a fan oven, i d say cook at 220 for the same time and see. you want them to be golden

ive tried lots of scone recipes, and this one is THE one, certainly for me.

Why in the name of arse would you mix it with a credit card?

you'd get the mix all over your fingers/ hands. and theres the little matter of not being able to use your credit card as it was covered in scone mix...

Could you not use one of the old loyalty cards at the bottom of your purse instead? Like a Tesco Clubcard. Or my completely useless Homebase Spend and Save Card? I've had it 10 years and I still have no idea exactly how I have spent and saved?

you dont you know. if you use a credit card or any plastic credit card sized thin then it keeps it all off your fingers. hence its use you noggin head.

I did wonder this myself. Can you sterilise credit cards? Or would they melt and go all bendy (which would probably please my bank manager)?

    'weirdo' ?

this is coming from a man who bakes with the contents of his wallet. do you whisk cream with your supermarket trolley coin key ring?

I wouldnt give it a second thought and i ve never washed a card i use. mind you, i normally use the same one. an expired clothing store card of madams.

waay too much paranoia about cleanliness for my liking. besides, theyre going in an oven at 200 degrees ffs ?

Gemma was you original recipe from the good food website? I made scones from there yesterday and they were way too sticky as well. I bunged in extra flour but they weren't great.
