security deposit - suits (MOSS_

NorthumberlandBride, 18 February, 2012 at 22:57 Posted on Planning 0 9

So were thinking about getting our suits from moss (quality is LOVELY, service seems good and theres a branch everywhere we need one) but the security deposit is scsaring/confusing me

they say the security deposit (payable by credit/debit card) is £200 per suit. now does anyone know if this is a bond type agreement? where if theyre not returned or whatever they take the money or am i really expected to pay £1000 upfront??

i know 1860 hire have a bond-type agreement where its payable if the suits arent returned or something happened to them

anyone know?

also is it fair to say - you break it you pay for it to the guys wearing the suits?

We just hired ours from 1860, we paid half the price upfront and will settle a week before the wedding when we go to collect (they let u have the suits 10 days before so things can be double checked/changed) We also paid an accidental waiver fee of £7 per suit (required) The agreement we signed was that an accidental damage which is repairable is covered by that. anything we lose, we pay for, anything which can't be repaired, we pay for (eeekkk) Apparently the handkies and cufflinks are the things lost most often (I might tell my groomsmen to get their own and pin their hankies in lol)

Oh, the lady did say she would take a swipe of a card when we pick the suits up as a bond for non returns. I'm sure she said £100 per suit but I could be wrong. She said they swipe it on an old style credit card machine (with the paper) and lock it away, then destroy it when they get the suits back.

1860 is my backup, mainkly because they don't have a branch n ear hove where my brother in law lives (we need one in newcastle, coventry/birmingham, nottingham and brighton/hove) so theye not much good. moss is our first choice but i kinda need to know if its the same deal with security deposit/bond because i really cant afford 1300 upfront (the £1000 securitydeposit and the 50% of the cost)

I have hired our suits from Moss and really hope I'm right in thinking that they just swipe your card for the details (don't actually take any money out) so that if a suit is not returned or extremely badly damaged beyond repair they'll then take the £200 per damaged suit.

You pay about £7 per suit ADW (insurance) so a teared seam from dancing, spilt gravy/drink etc is covered by this damage insurance! You'd have to shred the suit or something horrendous to have the £200 taken!

I HTH and hope I am right, maybe another hitcher will be along shortly who has also hired from Moss and confirm, cos it did start to get me in a panic lol

Just to give you another option we are using Cameron Ross http://cameron-ross.co.uk/findretailer/Default.aspx they are normally located in smaller wedding shops but are linked all over the UK I did a quick check and it looks like they have shops within about 15miles of where you mentioned but if you have everyone's post code you can see exactly how close they are!

They pre-charge your credit card i.e make sure you have the money available but don't actually take the money unless you don't return the suits. The fee is £200 per suit. My brother hired through them for his wedding and I asked this question of him recently!

I had an EEK moment too when I read the 200 deposit per suit, your right its badly worded! all they do is imprint your card on the old fashioned paper swipe they dont actually take any money.

Ok another question then! Although they don't actually take the money do you have to have that amount of money sitting in the account for it to work?

    Hi,

Years ago when I worked with Moss, the security deposit was a paper swipe of your credit card. These days I would imagine it is different (all though I don't know for certain).

When I worked with Youngs hire (after working with Moss) we pre-authorised the deposit. So although the money wasn't actually taken, the amount was authorised. This does stuff you up if you are intending to use your card for large purchases over the few days you have the suits. It is the same when you check in to a hotel or hire a car, so be aware that your card issuer may or may not authourise two different pre-authourisations.

Within most hire contracts you will find that you are liable for the full retail value of the goods hired. You can pay accidental damage waivers, but these will not cover you for any losses or damages which are deemed reckless (sliding around on your knees for an extreme example).

I would suggest you read the T&C's carefully before signing and be aware that your card issuer may require the funds in the account before authourising a pre-auth.

    Thanks

    Marc
