Sender of mail hasn't paid postage....

Hugo Brambles, 17 June, 2008 at 15:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

The postie has put a card through my door saying they can't deliver an item as there is a fee to pay owing to the fact the sender hasn't paid full postage. If I ring the sorting office are they able to tell me who the item is from before I pay the postage? I'm not expecting anything so am reluctant to pay for something I don't even want?!

They'd probably tell you the postmark or something, I doubt they'd open it for you.

Is it very far to go to the sorting office and have a look before you pay?

I'd go and have a look if you can, they should show it to you before you pay. We had a card saying the same, but wasn't addressed to us but the previous owners' son (we moved in nearly 2yrs ago!). I phoned the sorting office and told them to bin it!

Sorry I didn't mean open it I just meant if had a company name/return address on it would they tell me that.

It's not far from me (in our local town) but it is a NIGHTMARE to park - it only has 3 parking spaces (!) and because of that people park behind you and you end up doing an 'austin powers' 52 point turn to get out. I've been once and never again! There is no local parking on the street either as it's straight out onto traffic lights and a roundabout.

True story: I received a similar card about excess postage, and assumed it was in connection with a package I'd been expecting to arrive round about then. So I went round to the post office, expecting to be handed a parcel, and instead it was a C4-sized envelope that was just fractionally over the limit.

So I went back home... only to find another card saying that they tried to deliver a parcel that needed a signature when I was out picking up something I didn't especially want!

    Cheesed anyone off lately?

I've been known to send people old phone directories in my bored moments

Particularly effective when you get junk mail with a 'freepost' return address.

Give them a ring then, i'm pretty sure they will, I think we've done it here at work before now when we've had to pay money for an item that had incorrect postage on it.

Our sorting office always shows you the item if you ask. i once had excess postage to pay on junk mail, which needless to say i declined to pay

our sorting office is a nightmare to park outside too as its all double yellow lines. i go at 7am when they are just opening, and there is noone else there. but i have the advantage i can go straight after finishing work at 645

At christmas I walked just over 2 miles to the sorting office and had to pay 2p + over a pound handling charge for a christmas card from my mum. I was not impressed.

Do you know you can pay the excess postage online and then have it redeliverd. I know that doesn't help if it's not something you want but £1.06 (or whatever) might be easier than all the hassle of going down there.

My mum sent me a catalogue of outdoor furniture from B&Q (it was a flimsy little thing) and didn't put the correct postage on

Very happy I was to pay over £1 to get that. Not.
