Sending bank statements as proof of purchase

Flaming Nora, 24 June, 2008 at 14:30 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

What information would you blank off? I'm not sure what they actually need as proof of purchase, do they need my details on the statement or just the date, shop and amount?

Should I use a black marker over all the other credits and debits?

I would take a photocopy, then blank off everything on the photocopy except the purchase details and your name. - send the photocopy

Not quite the same thing but whenever I have to give a bank or credit card statement in for an expense claim at work I blank out everything which isn't essential/ relevant so all other transactions, my account and sort code details and my address. I never give in the original either, always a photocopy and the blanked details are removed by sticking bits of paper on them pre photocopy. I generally find that black markers don't really cover things up.

I'm not saying it's necessary to be so secretive but as far as I'm concerned none of the other information is any of their business so I remove it.

I've photocopied it, I'm confused now though as if you pay anything by cheque it'll have my bank account and sort code anyway.

If I blank everything except the line with their purchase on then surely it'll just be a blank sheet of A4 that could have been typed (the one line) myself ?. How can I show enough to be authentic?

I would have thought that the transaction will have the store name and reference code on it too (if it's a part of a chain), the date the transaction took place and the amount the transaction was for. I would have thought that would be enough for the company to check back to the original store which gives you the proof of purchase.

I don't think it's absolutely necessary to wipe out all the other details, but as none of the other information is relevant I wouldn't want to share it with them. The copy will still have things like the bank logo and the general layout. It would be pretty obvious that you've just blanked things out. I don't think they would expect to be sent a complete copy of a statement anyway.

Thanks Tweek, the purchase is listed as the store but no reference number or anything. The issue is that the bank statement is being sent to TomTom but the purchase was made through Halfords, so they won't be able to trace anything anyway.

I've got the bank name and logo, my name and address and all the transactions but with none of the details so its just a list of numbers rather than personal details (except for the transaction they want). Hopefully that'll do it.
