Share your 'Old, New, Borrowed, Blue' items................

GEMINIBEBE, 3 May, 2010 at 22:56 Posted on Planning 0 18

Hi girls, just as the title says, please share your ideas, and I have a couple of questions;

1. Can your dress count as 'New'?

2. Can I buy myself something 'Blue' or does someone else have to give it to me?

3. Do you have to carry or have these items on your person on the day?

Never really thought about it until H2B just brought it up...................... ?

Old will be my engagement ring (it'll be 17 months old but the only other thing I could think of was a ring my Mum gave me which I could put in my bag but I'd be scared of losing it)

New will be my dress (or i suppose it could be my veil, shoes, bag etc)

Borrowed will be my garter from my CBM

Blue will be the blue bow on the garter

So yes your dress can be new, you can buy your own blue or have a blue bow sewn inside your dress or have a blue gem put in your jewellery or bouquet and yes I believe tradition is to have them all with the on the day.

    Here's the proper traditions:

When I got married, I used my dress as my new and my borrowed and blue were my garter (which was my sisters and had blue in it). My old was a silver sixpence (something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence in my shoe!!!) from my mum that I wore in my shoe for the whole day...not that easy when you consider I got married on a beach in Thailand and had sand also in my shoes!!!!!!

My something old is my OH's grandmother's pearls, borrowed is SIL2B's shoes from her wedding, new will be my dress/veil/WR, haven't sorted the blue out yet but likely to be a blue ribbon on the garter/underwear, and I have a silver sixpence sellotaped to the bottom of the shoe!

Just seen this - these traditions are something I don't know why I'm bothered about, but I still have to do them! ? I think maybe it's just the whole "bad luck" thing if you don't.

For something old - thanks to whoever said engagement ring, I'd never thought of that! I've had it for 4 years now so I'm sure I can get away with that ?

For something new, I'm also having my dress (or as someone else said, everything new on the day - veil, shoes, tiara etc!)

For something borrowed - was going to borrow this lovely Swarovski necklace from my mum, but at the weekend I tried my dress on with my tiara and decided I don't need a necklace, so god knows! My friend is making my jewellery for me - suppose this can't count as something borrowed because it's a wedding gift really? Hmmm ?

And for something blue - I'm wearing this garter from La Senza which has a little blue gem in it:

Don't particularly like it as I'm not really a fan of garters anyway, but just doing it for the tradition, however pointless that sounds! I have found that weddings can make you do odd things ?

Old - Is my Nan's BEM medal attached to my bouquet. It also means that she'll be with me on the day.

New - My dress, shoes etc.

Borrowed - My best friend is lending me the earings she wore on her wedding day.

Blue - My H2B is a huge spurs fan so i'm getting the spurs garter.

OK, my maid of honour who is a really good friend/cousin has offered to lend me her little blue charm which she had in her bouquet at her wedding that her BEST FRIEND gave her.

Without sounding ungrateful, Im not really feeling it because somebody actually gave it to HER, its not personal to me and her......

Do you think Im being unreasonable? Or should I shut the hell up and borrow the damn thing as a BORROWED and BLUE combined thing????

Old - my Mum's pearl necklace and earrings. Sadly my Mum died 9 years ago today so won't be at my wedding, but I'll be wearing her jewellery.

    New - my Dress

Borrow - my friend Sarah has lent me her veil and tiara, also I think the borrowed should ideally be from someone who is happily married for good luck.

Blue - my flowers have blue in them, as does my garter.

Yeah, just ordered it this weekend, so that can't be a borrowed thing! (I'm the first out of all my friends to get married, so I couldn't borrow my tiara or garter etc like a lot of others have done)

I'm totally stuck on borrowed! I only want to wear my engagement ring as jewellry (on my right hand pre wedding) and a friend offered her tiara to borrow but I didn't like it!

Old - A silver limited edition coin my Dad bought for me when I was a kid to give me on my wedding day. He's now passed away so am really glad I'll have something special with me on the day (was wondering if I could manage it in my shoe kebo!)

    New - wedding dress

Blue - Blue garter as I like the tradition and when the hell else will I wear one!

Borrowed seems to be the prob for a few of us - Geminibebe, if I were you I'd borrow the charm so it's sorted, but if something more special crops up then you can always explain to your friend you've been asked to use something meaningful from family, etc.

I really don't know what can be borrowed bar a garter that doesn't interfere with how we want to look on the Big Day!
