She has testicles!

*Eclair*, 21 September, 2013 at 13:44 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

Starting to think our female hamster might be a boy...

We bought her/him a couple of weeks ago and were told (s)he was female. A couple of days ago we noticed that her/his back end was protruding a bit and looked a bit swollen. Thinking (s)he might be ill I did a quick internet search. Every website I looked at suggested that this "swollen bit" might actually be testicles.

Do I

a) Not care and continue referring to her as female?

or

b) Try and find out for sure in case there is a problem.

or

c) Something I've not thought of.

This isn't her but she looks like this. She's a boy isn't she.

The subject line made me click out of sheer curiousity....not sure what I was expecting though ? I don't know anything about hamsters but if you're not sure I'd get it checked out to be on the safe side.

My brother had a Chinese hamster once and my mum asked in the pet shop why was it all swollen at the back. Yep, it's the testicles!

Hmm, typical. Would you change her his name? She's called Saffron.

That's definitely a boy i'd say. You'll soon know as they'll keep growing, male hamsters become really..obvious.
My friend has a male and she can't believe everyday how big and obvious they are ?

Saffron is a girl's name....but actually the hamster won't care!! If you aren't going to breed from him/her/it, it probably doesn't matter at all.

    Until she grows a beard.

My sister had Eric the snake for 2 years before we discovered she was a girl. She didn't mind at all that we called her Eric Smiley smile

We had Morris the tortoise for years before she laid an egg.

    Still called her Morris though.

You are lucky to have a male hamster they are a lot calmer and laid back than the females and Saffron is superb for a hamster regardless of gender?

Yep, Saffron is a boy. I'd keep the name though!

Our last hamster, Julian, had such big knackers, he could sit on them, like an inbuilt beanbag.

Matthewsmummy I think you're right about them being obvious. Not sure there's any doubt any more...

When they are usnure of their situation they can entirely retract them into their body so if you don't know their gender for certain it usually takes a couple of weeks to appear. But def a boy?

The pet shop told us "she"s about 5 months old. She was in the adoption section because she'd been there so long. You think they'd have noticed in 5 months!

I am amazed at how difficult these places seem to be at sexing hamsters - it really isn't that hard! Possibly the problem is with the confidence in handling them.
