Shops from your childhood no longer around

bobbly1, 29 January, 2009 at 10:04 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 155

Idea blatently stolen from MSE but brought back loads of memories!

I remember

The Gadget Shop (loved nosing in there!)

Hamells clothes store

Salisburys for bags

Freeman Hardy and Willis for shoes

Dayvilles ice cream shops (49 flavours!)

Chelsea Girl (had a Saturday job there!)

Berni Inns - huge treat when we went there!

Our Price records - the Virgin ad reminded me of those

Midland Bank - my parents had their account there.

What ones do you remember?

    Fosters for "menswear"

    Saxone for shoes

C&A and particularly their Clockhouse range for "stylish" fashion items

Bejam (although does that count as it turned into Iceland...)

    <showing my age> Thoms <showing my age>

Anyone remember Thoms shops from the 70's early 80's?

Fairly sure the Gadget shop is still around as I think I've seen one in Brum (either Bullring or Merry Hell, can't remember). They've got a website, happy browsing! http://www.gadgetshop.com/

Mine is very specific - when I was a child there was a sweetshop near my house called The Chocolate Box. It was basically a converted front room of a house but I just remember it being really magical going in there with my 20p age 5 and having a very serious discussion with the lady about how best to spend my money! The house is still there with the sign on the front but it closed about 15 years ago and it still makes me sad when I see it - I'd have loved to take my kids there one day.

    Jean Jeanie

The Co-Op (huge department store that turned into a Next)

There used to be a shop that only sold posh "jogging suits" for women - can anyone remember the name? They were quite expensive - warm, fleecy tops in pastel colours for women of a certain age?

Carol's Kitchen - used to be called Bake and Take before that.

The Left Bank - for records (although I'm wondering if that was an independent one-off)

    Galt Toys

Nah, Etam wasn't plus size, I'm sure. Tammy Girl was a concession of theirs, I think.

The Sweater Shop and Benetton were all over the joint when I was a young whipper-snapper.

Yep, they certainly are. They're owned by The Entertainer Group (who sell the toys, innit).

Athena still exists as does the co-op.

Gateway became Somerfield if I remember rightly and we all know who the Midland Bank became I'd have thought (I still have an account with the HSBC)

I used to live in Benetton jumpers, and wore a white polo neck underneath, with a short black skirt and Nike Air Jordans - I was soooooooo cool ?

This wasn't in a small village in Surrey by any chance was it? There was a Chocolate Box where I lived that was a converted house and I think the sign is still there too!

There was a great chippy in Coventry called Fishy Moores. I used to get dragged in their once a week by my nan which I wasn't too impressed with as it was full of old people but their chips were lovely.

I remember Lilley and Skinner for shoes as well. I always wanted to get my school shoes from there, but dad made me get Clarks ones instead!
