Idea blatently stolen from MSE but brought back loads of memories!

I remember

The Gadget Shop (loved nosing in there!)

Hamells clothes store

Salisburys for bags

Freeman Hardy and Willis for shoes

Dayvilles ice cream shops (49 flavours!)

Chelsea Girl (had a Saturday job there!)

Berni Inns - huge treat when we went there!

Our Price records - the Virgin ad reminded me of those

Midland Bank - my parents had their account there.

What ones do you remember?

Ah, Rumbelows, I remember my mum bought our first VHS video recorder from there. We couldn't believe how small the tapes were after Betamax! ?

D2 is utter shite, isn't it?

    Stolen from Ivor?

I had my first savings account at the Bradford & Bingley - they used to have a fab advert with a couple dancing Saturday Night Fever style.

Timpson Shoes - small claim to fame - In my youf I was a child model and was in an advertising campaign for Timpson Shoes. I was on a picture in all their shops sitting on the floor with a pair of burgundy velvet pedal pushers and a pair of lovely burgundy patent shoes looking all happy at my gawgus footwear ? I got such stick from everyone at school and one of my old friends on FB reminded me about it the other week - she always referred to me as "[name] you know, the Timpson girl" ?

We had Geordie Jeans up here which was a place of wonder at one point! I remember Prestos becoming Safeway I think! Or it might have been Gateway, I can't remember which! My nana used to take me to Notriannis for ice cream, and THE place to buy toys in Sunderland was Josephs, which is now an all you can eat Chinese buffet.......

This is going back a bit, but does anyone remember the green shield stamp shops?

I remember my dad would get reams of the stamps (probably from buying petrol) and we would stick them in the books, and then go to the shop (I think it was in Chiswick) to redeem them!

    https://www.retrowow.co.uk/retro_britain/green_shield_stamps/Green_Shield_Stamps.html

    brings back memories!

My mum used to collect the co-op blue stamps as well.

Down here (as far south as you can go in the UK and across some water still heading south) we still have Safeway. I don't think that Morrison bought it and it may well be a franchise but it's definitely still selling food and advertising itself as Safeway.

I don't think anyone ever went in without their grandparents ?

We used to go in wimpeys as a treat for a chocolate milkshake and a limp burger. I thought it was cool that you had to walk across the ramp to get to it and that it was round and in the air.

Even though co-op still exists it's a shame they got rid of the old one in coventry. It was like a maze with certain sections only accessible from certain stairs.

Green Shield Stamps - that takes me back. You used to get about 40 of them for about a pound's worth of petrol. We used to love licking them all and sticking them in the books as well. You must be nearly as old as me bobbly ?

I'm not sure if these are Leicester specific but I used to get rid of my 'spendo' in Revolver records on 99p 7 inches, or picture discs if I was lucky. Any money left over went on jokes and stationary from Paper Tiger. God I am old.

Responding to a few of the names mentioned so far ...

I remember Andy's Records - there used to be (may still be there?) one in Peterborough. And they used to have one of those terrible localised cinema adverts, which was a cartoon of a little figure dashing down a street, with a voice over saying:

    "Where are you running to?"

    Response:

"We're running to [different voice] Andy's Records, Bridge Street, Peterborough - for all your vinyl (?) and cassette needs"

I think Timothy Whites was always part of or associated with Boots, as my grandmother used to be able to use her Boots staff discount card in there; there was also a chain of chemists called Underwoods which got subsumed by Boots at some point in the late 80s.

Pizzaland (that had the ad where the slice of pizza was taken out, and the word Pizzaland was spelt in the cheese) and Spoils are the only two I can think of that haven't already been mentioned.

I cant remember where the old co-op was in Coventry, remind me? I remember Grandma taking us to see Santa at the Co, was it on Corporation Street?.

I used to love visiting Hobdays pet shop and Isherwoods butchers on Ball Hill, makes me miss my Grandma.

Am loving this thread btw, its making me smile.

Edited to add Hobdays still exists,

Do you remember Woolies being where Boots is now? In the lower precinct.

    Think these are all Scotland specific, but I remember;

    William Low's (Wullie Low's) - Supermarket

John Menzies - WH Smith of its day

What Every Woman Wants - Low class clothes shop, if daring to buy an item from Wobblies every self respecting teenager would take their own carrier bag with them (preferably Tammy Girl) to avoid the horror of walking through the high street with Wobblies distinctive purple and white carrier bag.

    I remember -

    Dash

Chelsea Girl - i had some lovely crop tops from there!

Tammy Girl - Philip Green bought Etam and saved Tammy Girl which are in his BHS stores (at least they were the last time i looked)

Wimpey - all though it still exists holds fond memories as i had brthday parties there with a few friends and we would have the knickerbocker glories ,,,mm mmm

Madhouse Superstore - used to get the best fitting jeans from there... Falmers - as modelled by Naomi Campbell and others - the only ones that didnt leave a massive gaping hole in my back, they actually tapered into the contour of my back.

LA Gear's - I loved the 3 or 4 differents types of laces they came with and the little tags ?

Athena - had a great Jason Priestly poster in it, but it sold out before i had the money to buy it - plus a gorgeous boy worked there so spent many a day going in and looking at the posters

Pizzaland - i loved the half a pizza, coleslaw and Jacket potato - great meals out

Berni Inn- they were great - we went there for family birthday's and New years Eve - the ice cream with turkish delight sauce

    oh the memories

? Dash tracksuits. My mum made me wear them when I was about 13, for a special fashion treat ? anything that was actually fashionable was "too racy" or "makes you into a sheep - do you want to look like all those girls?" and/or "they don't do your size, it'll never go round you"

    [traumatic flashbacks]

Bejam. Did that turn into Iceland?
