Idea blatently stolen from MSE but brought back loads of memories!

I remember

The Gadget Shop (loved nosing in there!)

Hamells clothes store

Salisburys for bags

Freeman Hardy and Willis for shoes

Dayvilles ice cream shops (49 flavours!)

Chelsea Girl (had a Saturday job there!)

Berni Inns - huge treat when we went there!

Our Price records - the Virgin ad reminded me of those

Midland Bank - my parents had their account there.

What ones do you remember?

Etam did a really good plus size bit, and if you took the clothes to another till in the hsop you got the normal bad instead of the 'plus' one, as if people couldnt see that I needed bigger sizes!! Evans is still around, but their clothes aren't as good as the Etam ones.

The original William Low was actually my great great (possibly some more greats) uncle - that's my claim to fame!

I also remember WEWW, I remember getting a pair of jeans with flourescent braces, and a fluorescent pink and yellow off the shoulder belly top when I was abou 10 or 11 - thought I was the bees knees.

Can I add Littlewoods? I remember they used to have a food court too, which then became Iceland I think.

Oh God that's just brought back a teen memory that I thought was well buried... me and my friend used to spend FAR too much of our time in Texas. We'd buy a greasy sausage roll and a styrene cup coffee from the in-store cafe (and thought we were very sophisticated too), have a wander round the display house then sit outside on the display garden swing and chat for an hour or so. We must have done this about twice a week for a whole summer... what must the staff have thought ?

    - Has also made me realise that I grew up in a crap area with nothing to do.

Others... John Menzies, Liptons, Bentalls, the little old fashioned chippy round the corner from where I grew (decor completely unchanged from the 30s, loads of marble, beautiful old tiles and little green vinyl covered banquettes for customers to dine in) - unbelievably the shop is still there but has been closed 15 years or more.

Ooh and Huckleberry's in Shepherds Bush, all the cool kids had parties there and got to go out the back and make their own burger (I wasn't a cool kid alas ?)

OOh Skirt and Slack centre - used to think I was sooo trendy getting my pencil skirt for school there.

Beaujangles - fancy boutique place- I remember Patrick Mower ( Rodney fromm Emmerdale) opened our local one and my pal and I got half hour off work to go see him

Andrew J Kidds - bakers a la Greggs but had cafe as well.

These may well just be local one here.

Many a Saturday morning did Imy school friends and I spend sitting in the window of Wimpeys with my coke float eyein up the boys

I remember a clothes shop called Jeffrey Rogers (I think) - it didn't have proper changing rooms so you had to try your stuff on in one big room. I remember going in there to try something on and my mum coming in with me for some reason, and I had a really naff bra on - think I was about 14!

Also does Radio Rentals still exist - I remember hiring our washing machine from there when I was at university!

Deep Pan Pizza! I went there for my 17th birthday in Blackpool! Didn't actually eat anything as I spent all night yakking my spleen up in the lavs after 6 double vodkas and lime cordials (classy) glugged in a local 'wine bar; just before!!!

I fecking hated C&A. All the girls at school had Tammy Girl, Benneton, Sweater Shop and Naf Naf. What did I get? C and bloody A (with some Naff Co. 54 market knock-offs for good measure). No wonder my whoredrobe is fit to burst nowadays ?

Does anyone remember True Form shoe shops?

This thread has triggered a repressed memory of a drunken snog in the True Form shop doorway one night. Eek!

I had a pair of turquoise jeans from Jeffrey Rogers (in the brief period when such things were vaguely fashionable I hasten to add) and they were also very good for polo neck jumpers. I was very sad when they closed. I was also very sad when my norks got bigger and I couldn't wear polo necks any more, but that's another issue entirely ?

    I remember loads of these!

What about Index, which I think was just an imitation of Argos?

And anyone in NI will remember Stewarts/Crazy Prices and the wonderful advertising with Jim Megaw. Those were the days before the English supermarkets ventured over. I also worked in Wellworths as a student, which then became Safeway.

I loved Etam. I still remember panicking that I had washed my chunky knit yellow jumper and it hadn't dried before the school disco when I was 14. I spent ages drying it with the hairdryer when it hadn't quite dried on the radiator!. It went fabulously well with my faux silk shirt, long black pencil skirt and pixie boots. I was the height of fashion!

I used to work at Gateways. We have a co-op on our village high street and there's another one about 2 miles away. It does fab wine offers.

    I've thought of a potential other;

    Bay Trading Co.

Might still be around but not in my city. I shopped there when I was a teeny weeny size, don't think they catered for anyone above a 12.
