Should I change my name on my passport?

Longtimecoming, 2 September, 2013 at 16:28 Posted on Planning 0 14

So we got married a little over a week ago (WooHoo) and we are just about to book our honeymoon for May 2014 however im confused over whether we should book it in my maiden or married name?

I rung the passport office and they said I can still fly on my old passport until it runs out in 2022 or I can pay £80.00 and renew it in my new name.

I love my new name and being a Mrs but is it really worth paying to change my name on my passport if I can just leave it be and fly using my old name.

What is everyone else doing/done?

I didn't change my name anyway, so perhaps not quite qualified to answer.

But you have a long time left on your passport, and a lot of future holidays to be booking in your maiden name. If it only had a year or two on it, I'd say wait. But you might be too impatient to wait nine years?

I aren't married just yet but I only renewed my passport last year and I begrudge paying to change if when I still have 9 years left on it! I intend to change my name but not on passport for now so I'll just make sure I book any flights in my maiden name.

I've thought about this alot. I love the idea of flying off on honeymoon with my new name but it does seem frivolous when it costs to change it. My other concern was not having enough time between wedding and holiday to turn a new one around. You have ages though so go for it, and like FTLOMB says it's a long time to wait for it to expire you you might as well do it now.

    Do it!

I'm changing mine, but I'll only have 18 months left to go on the old one...................

I only have a year left on my passport so will be changing if before the wedding to my married name - means it isn't valid until the wedding day but I don't intend to travel.

Plus already booked the honeymoon as a mrs.

£80 is a lot of money and if I had 9 years left on it would i change it? Yes probably as I would be booking holidays for the next 9 years in your maiden name. Suppose it depends how bothered you are about it.

I will have 9 years on mine left when we marry next year, I won't be changing it and booking our honeymoon in my maiden name. (But I am changing my name for all other purposes)

ETA - I probably will change it before the 9 years is up, but just can't justify the £80 that close to the wedding! ?

    Thanks everyone

I'm still undecided!!! I'm thinking now I will definately change it before the 9 years is up however we really do need all the money we can get towards paying off the honeymoon were booking so perhaps it would be better to leave it till after... BUT then i'm thinking do I really want to go on honeymoon in my old name!!!!!!

Im so bad at decision making!!!!

I am surprised that the equalities commission hasn't challenged this as it only affects females (mostly....I do know of one groom who changed his surname to hers)

It seems a tad unfair that you are financially penalised for getting married....

I agree that it should be free or even a more reasonable £20 admin fee. I haven't come across anything else that charges so much to change your name.

My driving licence runs out one week before my wedding too - so I'll be paying for a renewal and then getting another new one (luckily free) with my new name on.

Your driving license runs out? How come?

EDIT: sorry, just realised it's probably a photocard renewal?

Mine doesn't run out for a few more years and there is no way I'm paying to renew it until I have to. It didn't make any difference to how I felt on the honeymoon- the hotel knew we'd just married and still spoiled us just the same, and if we mentioned it anywhere people were keen to congratulate us and give us free treats ?

Oh yes sorry meant my photocard rather then my actual licence.

But you don't have to change your passport, it is still valid in your maiden name - so us females aren't being financially penalised, unless we choose to.

Not everyone has a passport either.
