Should the Groom's outfit be a surprise?

MrsMtobe2016, 10 November, 2015 at 13:45 Posted on Planning 0 16

I've literally no idea what the correct etiquette is with the groom's suite. Should i be involved in helping him choose, am i allowed to see it before the big day?

I think a lot of brides help with the grooms outfit. My other half wants to choose it himself we're agreed on roughly what he will be wearing and he knows what colours we've got for bridesmaids/flowers etc.

I don't know about etiquette in that situation (you could try Debretts) but I think you can pretty much do what you want.

My new wife chose the suits with me and saw me try it on. I think that's typical.

I've heard of some keeping it secret, but we didn't. :-)

I went with him to the hire shop and basically chose the suits with him there and then.

The boys will then be going back in a few weeks time to be measured so should be a quicker appointment.

I think its pretty normal to be involved as my OH didnt want the pressure of choosing it all haha!

I think most couples choose the mens suits together to make sure they suit the overall theme of the wedding. It quite popular now for men to wear their own suits and not have matching mens suits.

I went with my dad, brother and OH to choose suits. I'm too much of a control freak to let them try and choose their own, plus I'd never heard of grooms keeping their suits secret before!

I think not to the same extent as the bride's dress.

I'm trying to talk my fiance out of going for a full tartan suit. Glad I know about this plan in advance so I can shut it down!! (This is my only bridezilla moment by the way Smiley winking )

I went with my OH to get his suit. Whilst he chose what he wanted, the colour of the tie etc had to match the colours of the wedding x

Think it is entirely up to you and what you are comfortable with. My OH tried his suit jacket on and I saw it and we have discussed what he's wearing but when he had his jacket on with his smart work stuff I realised I didn't want to fully seehim in the outfit until the day. Do what you feel happy with.

I'm helping him choose it, because my dad is useless with these things and his best man lives in Asia. He also knows how tactless and blunt I am, so if it doesn't 100% fit, he'd rather have honesty than the flattery.

I would have been fine to be surprised on the day, but OH wanted my input.

Rather than asking what you're allowed to do, I would just ask him what he wants. Personally I would let him surprise you if he wants to Smiley smile

Thank you all for your help.
I've been involved in looking at suits but he's not made his final decision. I'll leave it with him now, makes it a bit more special

I'm gonna join the groom and his best man when they choose suits, just to be nosy really.

He knows what colours we're having in the wedding- its his choice what he chooses to be those colours. Think he wants to wear a coloured shirt (pastel), so I'm intrigued to see what that looks like!

I trust him to pick something appropriate but I might get involved in the colour of the tie. I'm kind of hoping common sense will prevail and he'll go for grey or slate blue. He looks awesome in slate blue actually.

My OH went out shopping and bought his suit for him and his best man without even telling me! He won't let me see it either. At first I was a bit shocked but actually now I think it's really nice he made that effort and it's something else to look forward to.

My H2B is taking me with him. He said he's not spending that much on a suit without my input!

We've planned what he will wear and I will go with him to the initial appointment but will leave the rest of the fittings to him.

Even if I saw him in it fully fitted before the Day, it'll look totally different ON the day because he'll have had his hair cut, styled it nicely...

Plus I'll be viewing it through my veil to begin with lol
