Showstopper Cake Challenge!!!

ATB, 21 January, 2013 at 12:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

So for her wedding next month my friend is having a cake table instead of dessert. So...

I need to make a cake that looks fab (and basically trounces the others ?) The challenges are that I will need to make it on the Thursday evening (wedding is on Friday). It will need to be stored over night in a hotel room before being set up in the venue on the Friday morning. Ideally I'd like to make it, assemble on the stand and box all the night before so I only have to take to venue and unbox! It only needs to be one teir, and is going on a low glass cake stand.

Help please!!!! If I could do any parts of it before the Thursday night too that would be grand, as I'll be coming home from work then wanting to head to the hotel asap to get the party started! Freezing any parts before hand would be grand!

So far I was thinking along the lines of Lorraine Pascale's cake, but don't think it's 'wow' enough:

Help pleeeeeeeeeeeeease! x

I've make that Lorraine Pascale one but with flakes instead of cigarellos.

You could try her malteser cake - looks pretty awesome!

Flakes you say? Hmm intersting! I've been looking at cigerellos and they are so expensive - flakes could be the way to go, but they may be a bit too bulky?

Yes I think flakes may be too bulky for that cake and blooming messy! If you don't think this one is wow enough could you use sweets rather than fruit? It'd keep better too.

Ooh Kharv... thanks for that love, good to see what the flakes will look like. I don't think I'd be able to do a heart, as my stand isn't that big and I reckon it would end up being a small heart to get it all to fit on. Round is maybe better in order to get more cake on!

Anybody know if you can still get white chocolate flakes or were they a one off specail for Anthea Turner's wedding!!? (anybody remember them - the snowflake!?)

ATB - a quick look at the Cadbury website says they don't do them anymore, you certainly can't buy them direct from cadbury. What about chocolate fingers? They defo do white ones of those

    was thinking the same!

that Lorraine Pascale one looks like a show stopper!

not sure you will have enough time to do this, but you could just pour melted chocolate on the die and when its dry scape bits off so its more delecate flakes of chocolate?!

*pops on coat and heads to the shops to stock up on Flakes*

That flake cake looks fab! The malteaser one also. A friend of mine had a malteaser covered wedding cake.
Do they have any favourite sweets you could incorporate? The sticks of chocolate cakes look "simple" but that can be half their beauty. And they do have a wow factor.

Years ago (before I was any good at baking), I tried a recipe from my James Martin Dessert book - a fire and ice cake. It took me 6 hours! I said never again but now I actually know what I'm doing - maybe I should try it again! ?

It's basically a 3 tier sponge cake with tuille "flames" and buttercream. The picture in the book had a flower arrangement on the top if I remember.

Something plain looking with rainbow sponge inside always give a "woooooooooow" although depends on the sort of wedding whether a bright cake is suitable. I'd totally have one.

Nigella's Maya Gold Chocolate mousse cake is quite possibly my fav cake ever! Simply paint the top with gold edible dust/powder for very simple but luxurious looking finish. Or you could add some faux gold flowers/sugar flowers or candies orange/Clementine

No last min prep required and keeps well in air tight container.

They all look amazing but I think the love hearts sweets cake is so apt. Could even do rainbow sponge inside? Or pastel or matching wedding colours?
