Sightseeing on the DLR

Gingey Wife, 24 April, 2008 at 16:28 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

I read this article ages ago in the Metro or one of the weekend supplements about jumping on the DLR and riding it out to the extents and the sights you can see.

Mr G and I are up in LV tomorrow and I was thinking about doing this as we always end up taking pictures on the South Bank and fancied doing something different. Is it a silly idea and is it worth it?

I would rather get on a boat to be honest!

The DLR is great between Bank/Tower Gateway and Canary Wharf as you do get a good view of the towers as you approach CW. It then trundles down the Isle of dogs to Greenwich but you can't see anything as you approach Greenwich as it is underground! Then it goes to Lewisham so not much to see there either!

The other route towards the Excel is also pretty dull. It runs to City airport but I can't think of any sights along the way. (apart from my flat?)

Maybe I am missing something but I wouldn't say it was an afternoons entertainment!

It is interesting to me as I've grown up & watched the area transform.

Barrier Park (pontoon Dock) is worth jumping off at to grab a coffee & walk around the gardens park

If you go along on from there to Gallions Reach - superb sunset views of Canary Wharf & City in the background (now looking like the poor relative) but you have city airpot in front of you.

Also the Stratford (I'd use this as you quick route back home) line gives you superb 2012 site views.

    I sound like a NERD....

I might visit that park if it's worth it!

We nearly bought a flat in the development there as they were building the park but I chickened out as it was too far away from Waitrose. ?

I've looked at a couple of things on the visitlondon website and they do have a couple of things but its a geting on and off thing to see docklands and cutty sark etc. I think we might do that as i've never travelled that far out.

Sounds great in theory, when it works, but for the last 3 weeks it's broken down at least 2 days a week. I had to walk from Mudchute to work (Canary Wharf) the other day, have also recently been stuck in a tunnel.

If the weather is nice, get off at West India Quay and have lunch outside. That's my favourite spot outside the old warehouse conversion with an amazing view of CW and a glass of white wine!

When I first started working at CW, almost 10 years ago, they used to have a guide on there telling you about all the sites. This was only the odd time on certain days. I wonder if they still do that?

The Cutty Sark isn't actually there at the moment as it's being restored. You do, however, get to see a big white tenty thing that they have over it's burnt-out remains.

Saturdays can be quite amusing in Greenwich as you see all the confused tourists wandering round looking for the big boat that isn't there.

I'd want one whose price would be included in our travelcard.
