SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER

Shelly70, 24 June, 2014 at 09:15 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi All

We have a couple of guests attending our wedding who are completely deaf and I am looking into the possibility of getting a sign language interpreter to sign for the ceremony and the speeches at the reception after. I just wondered if anyone else has done this or been to a wedding where they have had one, or even know where I would ask about hiring an interpreter for a few hours. Any help or suggestions gratefully received. Thank you in advance x

Sounds fab!! i'm sure that would be well appreciated and must be possible.

I'm no help in finding an interpreter but i think there's an association of sign language. they may be able to help you.

Why don't you ask the guests in question? Surely they may know of somebody? Smiley smile

Hi, my sister is deaf so we are getting an interpreter for her.

We originally approached someone who we had seen interpret for her at a family funeral. Lovely lady etc, but she was charging £160 plus travelling time. As we are only having a short civil ceremony, this did seem quite a lot, and I was sure that she hadn't charged that amount for the funeral we had seen her at.

So, I looked online and in Norfolk (which is where we are) there is a site called Deaf Connexions which has all sorts of links - I simply emailed someone on there about interpreters and asked if there was a list of approved people for wedding ceremonies, and approximate costs. She emailed me back to say that the cost of the interpreter would be covered by the city council as it is for a legal ceremony, but if we wanted the interpreter to stay for the speeches etc, we would have to pay an hourly rate.

If you google "Deaf Services ????" inserting the name of your county, then you should get something similar - just don't get caught up in paying for an independent interpreter for any more time than you need!

When I spoke to the registrars office when I made my booking, I also asked them if they had any preference - she was happy to leave it to me, but would have been able to give more details I'm sure, if I had needed them.

One other thing to bear in mind - your deaf guests may also want to lipread, and this will need you to think about where they sit at the ceremony as windows in the wrong place can cause shadows making it difficult to lipread.

    Good luck!

Yes I shot a wedding where half the wedding party signed and they are quite prominent in the signing community so I'm sure they would know where to hire someone from, they are in London though- is that anywhere near you?

Here's the wedding in sign language in case you wanted to see it!
