Silly question re witnesses

MsFrogToes, 30 June, 2014 at 09:36 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi all,

I'm new here. Getting married in October.

I have a very silly question regarding witnesses.

I would like my Finnish mother to be a witness as I really want her on the marriage certificate. While she can understand the ceremony fully (who wouldn't after watching so many soaps, films, and documentaries with English weddings) she's not particularly good at English (she's rubbish). So if she is asked questions she will freeze and either not absorb what it was that was asked her or won't be able to answer, or both.

So my questions is: Are witnesses asked questions before they sign the register at a civil marriage ceremony?

Thank you!

I don't think they are big questions, I'm pretty sure on my parents marriage certificate it states my parents whitenessess full name, date of birth and job.

You could always call up wherever your getting married and ask them what happens just so you can practice the questions in English with your mum so she has more of an understanding.

Oh and best of luck with all the wedding planning Smiley smile

I was a witness for my friend recently.

I just had to sign the register and then confirm to the registrar my full name, how I had signed (i.e. as my full name or my initials etc), and date of birth.

My mum was one of my witnesses and she barely speaks any English so it's fine.

I did wonder about this myself pre-wedding, as neither of our witnesses were UK residents. Turns out they really don't care who the witnesses are, where they are from, whether they speak English etc. It's more a formality it seems.

Obviously we all wondered this because you have regulations for who can 'witness' certain other legal documents and contracts, but nope, weddings aren't one of those 'picky' scenarios.

The registrar should care whether the witnesses speak/understand English. How can someone be a 'witness' if they haven't understood anything that has been said?

It could be that the registrar will engage your witness in conversation just to assess their skills in English.

if their English is not good enough they may still sign the register but along with 2 others.

please don't bank on her not being questioned.
