Sisters wedding in Santorini 2015 on a budget

Amyvick, 1 July, 2014 at 17:10 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 4

Hi All!

My sister got engaged just a couple of weeks ago and she's already stressing. She wants to get married abroad and is really keen on the Theros Bar in Santorini. They don't have much of a budget - aprrox £5-6000 and she thinks they'll be inviting about 60 people. Can anyone help with the following please?

  1. Has anyone on here got married/been to a wedding at the Theros Bar? Can you share your experiences please? When's the best/cheapest time to go?
  2. How do we find the best price? I use comparison markets for holidays etc but is there a specific one for weddings?
  3. How do you know how many people will be going? If she invites 60 people, maybe only 40 will actually go but you won't know this until invites have gone out. Is there anyway you can change the number after you've booked somewhere? It's a bit swings and roundabouts if you ask me!

Any help, advice, ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Amy

One of the things she might have to do is find a venue that will take a booking for a wedding of 20, but has the capacity to increase to 60, with an affordable price-per-head rate for all those potential extra people.

Getting married abroad is indeed tricky, as there will be a lot more people who turn down the invitation than at a home-wedding, just because it's not viable for various reasons (money / health / work issues / time / child care etc etc). Even if she does an advance scoping exercise amongst friends/relatives to see who 'might' be willing and able to travel, until a wedding date is set and costs of the trip determined, that scoping may not be a very accurate reflection on the reality that ensues.

Hopefully Hitchers who have married in that area will be able to give you and your sis some specific location advice. Good luck.

Thanks Claire! That's a great start. Do you think I should post this in another section on here?

Yeah, do a copy/paste to wedding planning (WP) forum.

I only look on this section because I'm honeymoon planning, LOL.

All the brides getting married overseas will be examining the WP discussion forum regularly, and I doubt anyone will moan that you're on the 'wrong' bit. If they do, don't worry about it too much. A wedding still needs to be 'planned', no matter where it's taking place ?

    Hi

I'm getting married in Crete, and tend to scan the wedding planning forum, more than this one! In terms of inviting people, we spoke to those who we definitely wanted there and when they said yes we can make it, we then asked everyone else (ie if my sister couldnt make it, i wouldnt go!). We are quite lucky, as we have holidayed in crete a lot, so the place we stay are hosting our wedding reception and acting as our wedding planners.

We are getting married at the end of April next year. It is right at the beginning of the season, which means lovely weather, but not too hot (who wants to see a hot sweaty bride), so i would def take that into account, i couldnt imagine wearing a big dress in a 35+deg heat, but could accept a 26deg heat! I think the cheapest times to go are April and sept-so beginning and end of season, less ppl around, so little cheaper and weather not so hot. We are booking flights this sept for April, they tend to be cheaper when they first come out, we are hoping for the £100 each return rate.

A lot of people use various wedding planners and from what i have seen have had good results-sun and snow etc, might help to be in contact with someone who knows the area if youve not been there before. I'm sure you could email some venues and get some quotes for 40-60 people, whilst asking family and friends to give an idea of whther they will come.

Happy wedding planning! Defo less stressful doing it abroad, not as much planning to do and guaranteed weather! x

Aw guys, thanks so much for your advice, it really helps. I need to make sure my sister joins this site so she can get all the advice etc first hand. Not that I mind; I find it exciting and also nice to know there's a lot of support around! I think she will probably do September as we have a friends wedding in Antigua in May.

I think the best thing for me to do now is post this in the wedding planning forum and hopefully someone who's been to Santorini will see it and be able to help.

Thanks a lot ladies, happy wedding planning for you both too!
