sleeping tablets/sleeping aid

AnnaBanana, 4 June, 2008 at 17:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

Im going on hol in a little over a week and it involves a long haul flight which im dreading. I get a little nervous on flights (but not terrified), but it stops me from concentrating on anything, so even movies and books don't make the time pass. Id love to be knocked out for the duration but the closest i'll get to that is some sort of sleeping aid which will make me sleep at least half the journey! Can anyone recommend anything? ive seen nytol, Kalms for night, rescue remedy night, and the other option is night nurse! I want something gentle, but effective! My dad travels a lot and he uses melatonin tablets, could pinch some from him I suppose! Any ideas?

Thanks!

Nytol are pretty good (the ones you buy over the counter from the pharmacy, not the herbal ones).

My husband has a big bottle of Melatonin that he brought back from the States. It seems to work well without any adverse effects, and helps to sort out any problems caused by jet-lag too

Nytol are fab (I use the 1-a-night tablets) to be honest - if you are that anxious then your adrenalin would probably act against most 'sleep inducing' products so I'd imagine you'd need something strong like Nytol.

The other option is asking your doctor for beta-blockers which would stop your anxiety.

    Thanks everyone.

I just get sooo bored id rather be asleep the whole way! on the way out its a daytime flight, way back is evening. i once flew to NYC and slept the whole way, and it was bliss. Im not even bothered about the food as I tend to not eat it anyway. Will see if I can get some melatonin if not some Night Nurse or Nytol. Do the last two have any adverse effects?

You cannot get melatonin (easily) in this country, last time I got some I was in Australia and it does help but the ease of access isnt great, am going to try and get my cousin living in America to get me some when she next comes back over

I have horrendous sleeping problems (in the last 2 weeks I have had on average 4 hours sleep a night) and had a few nights of sleeping tablets prescribed by Dr but then have switched to nytol as I dont want to rely on the sleeping tablets

Only time i've had adverse effects from NN was when I popped two thinking they were day nurse. Unwanted effect = sleep. ? You're quite drowsy if you wake from a NN sleep as a result of being woken up, so ensure you have enough time to make it worthwhile and to avoid droswiness.

Thanks, hopefully dad will have some melatonin, he goes to the Far East every 6 weeks or so, he's a pro at the long haul thing!
Night nurse seems a good option. Flight is about 10 hours so that should be pleeeenty! Although leaves at 11am so I will be totally awake when I arrive. Don't care though as long as it makes the flight go quicker!

I find that one or two Syndol completely knock me out if I need to sleep. They contain paracetamol, codeine and an antihistamine that works as a muscle-relaxant. You can get them over the counter, they're for tension headaches, period pains etc.
