Sniffing/snorting instead of blowing

jaz, 20 March, 2009 at 14:02 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Your nose - apparently is better for your sinuses according to my dad according to his dentist. Apparently its much better to erm... snort and spit that blow out the nose. Has anyone else heard of this or is he trying to make me look really gross ?

It may very well be 'better' for you but I'd rather lock my snot in a hanky than gob it down the sink - I suppose I could gob into a hanky, but TBH I probably wouldn't be any good at it and end up with it all down my chin.

It's one of the most stomach turning sounds hearing someone snot backwards ready to spit

My husband and his family do this. Their great aunt was a physician and she was fearsome - they were not allowed to blow their noses and had to sniff/swallow. Something to do with preventing ear infections apparently. It drives me mad but it's a hard habit to break. And they are v posh too. I just can't get my head around it.

Sometimes it can be incredibly painful to blow my nose when I have a cold so I tend to blow with caution.

There are other times when there is loads of gunk which makes me sniff but is so thick/high up that it doesn't move through blowing. Grim huh?

If I sniffed and swallowed/spat out I would be constantly vomiting, even accidentally doing it makes me boke. Urgh.

Although I am careful not to blow too hard when I have a cold, l tend to get nosebleeds otherwise.

It's not the nosebleeds for me - it makes my ears explode

Both have their place for snot in different places. The stuff you can snort would never come down your nose, it's all at the back. I sniff when there's a vague sensation of a runny nose, but blowing produces nothing.
I know snorting is a grim sound, I do it in private, or if I'm desperate in public, I wait for a noisy bike or something ?
