So I ordred my Bridesmaid dresses from China.. WWYD?

xlovebirdsx, 26 of June of 2012 at 07:40 Posted on Planning 0 17

I ordered my Bridesmaid dresses from JenJenHouse.com, who are based in China.

I have already paid £38.34 for delivery, and was not told at the time that any further payments would be due. So you can imagine my surprise when UPS came to my door to deliver the parcel, telling me the parcel was Cash on Delivery!!

Therefores, I was unable to accept the delivery of my dresses, as they required an extra £76.74 delivery/tax/import charge...

I contacted JenJenHouse to ask them to either pay, or refund me £76.74, but they have said no.

What do I do?

That is terrible. How much did the dresses cost you? Does it say anywhere on their website that there may be further charges when the dresses arrived in the UK?

They would have charged you delivery but not import taxes and duty as they cannot be paid until they enter the UK

These are your responsibility and it is the risk you take on importing anything I'm afraid

Unfortunately the charges are customs and carrier handling for collecting customs and anything you order from China or the Usa will be subject to these, it's like import VAT in a way. Obviously I know this because I import stock but the first time it happened to me I was shocked too. Sometimes smaller items get marked as samples or gifts and don't get charged but a large order will usually be marked correctly and so be picked up by customs. Unfortunately no company pays the import taxes for you. Sometimes they warn you on the confirmation email but they don't have to. If you refuse to pay you won't get the parcel and you won't get a refund from Jen Jen house either. So you need to balance the £76 against the amount you will lose if you don't pay.

You also only get 3 attempted deliveries, UPS will attempt delivery again today I assume

This is the bit on their website under FAQ

    3. How is sales tax paid?

The product prices you see has already included sales taxes.

Note: please be aware that some countries may charge a customs import duty tax that you may have to pay, please check with your local customs office for further information.

What a pain though that you weren't aware of this before

Unfortunately I think you will have to just pay it

As others have said, this is a standard charge when ordering from certain countries, and it is not the fault of the company. It is rubbish though.

I had this when ordering dresses from the US, it is the norm. If you are ordering things like this from abroad you need to do your homework first.

I found though that even with the import tax I still saved money.

I'd get UPS to clarify what the charge is for your peace of mind

Ahh, well at least you're pleased with them. Imagine you'd hated them after paying all the extra!

I must have been lucky, I had my wedding dress shipped from China and never got charged any taxes, I would have been totally clueless too though.

Would you recommend getting them from China? I know you had to pay extra, but overall did you save on high street prices?
