song lyrics for reading?!

Charlied, 30 June, 2010 at 12:15 Posted on Planning 0 9

I have searched and searched for readings and can't fing the right one.

I have already asked OH's dad to do a reading, I know he will deliver whatever I give him perfectly be he is insistant that we pick it.

I have now turned my attention song lyrics as a reading. Any thoughts? Possible ideas? nothing too fluffy

There are a lot of songs I love, but personally I think it's icky. It just reminds me of Calvin and Carmel's wedding in Hollyoaks when their vows were I Got You Babe.

Re the doctoring, interesting question. I can't see why not, but I guess you'd just have to give the doctored version to the registrar to approve (not that it should make any difference, but if they're awkward they might do a "that's not what I approved!"

The problem with song lyrics is I think it's difficult to read them without getting sing-songy. I wonder if there's something you can do around a favourite book or something? OH and I looked at this but we both like Martin Amis and F Scott Fitzgerald and their stuff thends to be a bit innapropriate....

I had major problems with the readings actually cos OH doesn't like Shakespeare or poetry - we've gone for the Les Miserables thing and the Mark Twain thing, which aren't overally icky, but I still don't think OH is that keen...

Its hard work isnt it, trying to find one?! OH doesnt read. full stop. and ideally wanted something that meant something to both of us, so that drove me down the song lyric avenue. I could say scrap a reading but I do want on because it adds something extra to a rather short ceremony. Also I wanted to give OH's dad a role in the ceremony (my dad giving me away and our mums are being witnesses) so Im still wading through a big pile of icky mush and not coming much closer to anything

I think you've set yourself quite a hard task! We went to a wedding a couple of years ago where they did that very thing and I have to say it was cringeworthy! Otherwise a lovely ceremony.

Do you have a particular favourite band you could focus on and take lyrics from?

What I have done for one of my readings is, as a lifelong Manic St Preachers obessive (!) is I have trawled through all their lyrics and taken a line here and there from a lot of their songs and made it into a reading. This way it is isn't too slushy or sing songy, but it means a lot to me.

is there a song that means something to you!?? You could ask him to find a poem that he feels would be good for him to read. a few words of wisdom kind of thing! Or the lyrics of a song he likes!
