SophieM (or anyone) help......... Cravings, eating and periods

Mrs M, 10 February, 2009 at 14:49 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 9

I thought of you first Sophie as I know you're good with low GI and combatting cravings but really I'm after help from anyone.

I've been ELMM for almost 9 months. I've lost 64lb, have gone from an obese to normal BMI but more importantly totally changed my relationship with food and what I eat.

The only problem is just before and during my period. Its not so much sweet cravings just food cravings. I seem to get really hungry and really really want to pick. I try to choose well but fruit just doesn't cut it. Sometimes I can cope with a ryvita mid morning and afternoon but I still struggle. At the moment I'm munching on honey nut bite size shredded wheat, sometimes I'll be at the chocolate shreddies. Neither ideal but better than troughinf my way through the fridge until I find what it is I neeeeed iyswim.

So can you suggest snacks that may keep me satisfied for longer. What do/did you do at this time? Or did it not affect you?

Cheers

I'm glad you asked this mrs m. I started calorie counting last Monday - my period arrived on Wednesday. I fought hard with the same feelings and got through but I'd like the next month to be a bit kinder to me...so shall be watching with interest.

(I did find that oodles of excercise helped most of my other usual pmt symptoms though)

    ?

The two things that I find best for choc cravings are peanut butter and cheese. Neither are particularly low-cal but they do the job, and offer a bit more bang for your buck nutritionally than shreddies and the like!

To be honest though, I think if you're feeling grim and premenstrual there is probably no harm in being kind to yourself and jjust haivng a bit of what you're really craving. I'd buy a small box of really lovely, really expensive chocs and just have one or two. After all, chocolate is a really good source of iron and tha's what you need when you're having your period.

Dot there always seems to be something around the corner trying to sabotage us isn't there, good luck with the calorie counting, and glad to hear the exercise is helping pmt.

Sophie I knew peanut butter would be in your answer ?. I know what you're saying about the expensive chocolate, and this is how I keep any choc cravings at bay since I started ELMM. Knowing I can have what I want when I want stops me wanting it iyswim.

But during my period its not really about craving what I fancy, its about being much more hungry than normal and wanting/needing to eat lots and often ?. I'm guessing the peanut butter on say wholemeal toast or ryvita might fill me up for longer between meals?

Slightly aside I never had any premenstrual (or during) problems before having children, and am still breastfeeding so I wonder if the different hormones make me more hungry?

    Eat then, eat, eat! [/jewishmother]

Seriously, I wonder if upping your EFAs might be the answer? Try snacking on seeds, nuts, sardines on toast, avocado etc. All relatively lardy but filling and soooo fantastically good for you.

No not on the pill Doughnut. It would have to be the mini pill as I breastfeed but I took the pill for years and since having babies I'm reluctant to go back on it (I don't know why)

Would love to stop having periods though ?

Hmm Mrs M, if you don't want periods either, then perhaps the answer is another baby? ;o)

It is the mini pill, sorry, forgot to say. It isn't like other mini pills though, I think it's a new one or something.
