Spain or Gibraltar

scubakaty, 15 May, 2010 at 18:18 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 7

Hi all bride's to be,

I am trying to plan my wedding for September 2011, we live in Valencia Spain (Both of us are british), it seems so complicated and expensive to get married in Valencia and Spain in general. We are going to Gibraltar in June 2010 to have a look around, has anyone got married in Gibraltar recently as we have had very very mixed reports, if so where, when, any idea's on florists, photographers, locations etc

    Hi there!

Why dont you send an enquiry to a local wedding planning company in Gibraltar? I know Hour Weddings in Gibraltar - and they have all the best suppliers in their books. And dont worry, they are really helpful - and not expensive. Google them. Gibraltar is a really nice little place, and the weather will be great in June. Good Luck with it all!

Hiya. We looked into getting married in Gibraltar and the laws seem the same as in Britain. So quite easy to do. I think? the reason we didn't is the our grandparents wouldn't be able to come. but we wish we had now!

    Good luck x

    Hi,

I haven't been to Gibraltar personally although I had also considered it as a wedding destination as I found out you either have to be Spanish or own a proerty in Spain to get married there.

I searched on tripadvisor to get an honest opinion RE the hotels and when I looked, I personally didnt "love" any of them.

I spoke to a friend about it who recently went to Gibraltar on business and she said it is literally a rock, and the runway for planes is a road, so they stop- the cars to let the planes land... sound odd to me.

From my understanding you can have a civil ceremony in Gibraltar and then have a blessing in Spain which all frineds/family attend.

I think the latter option could be a good one

Nicest location in Gib for a wedding is probably the caleta hotel or somewhere up the rock. For fllowers try Stephanies (can't remember the exact shop name but it comes up in a google search). Gib makes sense as all the laws are the same although some areas of it are quite run down. Actually there are some swanky new hotels on the new marina deelopement and also a casino and some quite nice bars which have just opened up - last time I was there they were in the process of opening most of them (I'm half gibraltarian but haven't visited since I was 12 weeks pregnant!). Casemates square is a nice area too (on main street).

Also there is an M and S there so if you were wanting to cut costs and have an M and S cake that should be possible. Most of my family have got married tho have had the ceremony in Gib and the reception in Spain due to costs. However, bear in mind that all your guests will have to get through border control - quick enough on foot but can take a long time in a car, especially if the spanish authorities are having one of their awkward days! Also if you go for this option don't even bother with la linea (the town the border is in) head up the coast - unless there have been some major improvements since I was last there la linea is a dive!

Not quite true that the planes use the road - they cross the road as a level crossing with a train but as only 3 flights leave a day that isn't usually an issue! Also a new road is currently being built to try and bypass the runway although from my mums description i can't see how it works but anyway!) - no idea when its due for completion tho!

    HTH!

Gibraltar's really quirky, but also very enjoyable to visit, and to host your wedding - i'm a little biased as I am from there! however, you wont be disappointed if you want to plan anice wedding there. The three top hotels are very nice - I personally like both the Rock Hotel and the Caleta Hotel. They are very good hotels. If the hotels in Gib don't appeal to you , you could get your party to stay in Spain - loads of choice there - and then travel to Gibraltar for the civil service and small reception. Then save the big reception for Spain, where you are staying. Again, not just because she is a friend of mine but also because she's really good at what she does, contact Monica at Hourweddings, and ask her to send you some recommendations. At least it will give you an idea of whats available there! Best of luck with it all! x

    Hi,

I don't have any experience in Gibraltar but if you would like to get married in Barcelona. I could help you to look for the perfect place according to your budget.

I have prepared the wedding of several of my friends, and myself I got married 9 months ago. The experience of preparing my wedding was so greatful that I decided to run my own company as a wedding planner, to help other brides to make their wedding become an unforgettable and special day, taking them out the stress of not knowing where to look for the ideal place, or not being sure about forgetting some important detail.

In fact, my wedding was wonderful (hence the name of the company) and, according to the invitees, one of the best they have ever attended. Indeed, the images in our website are from then. I invite you to have a look at them at http://www.wonderfulwedding.es/en/

We have experience in preparing weddings, taking care of every detail, so that you have a perfect and wonderful wedding.

If you are interested, send me an email (you will find it in the webpage), and I will give you the details of the services and prices we offer.

Congratulations for your engagement! It would be great to help you to prepare your wedding.

    Best Regards,
    Pilar

    Hi,

Did you get any joy with Gibralter? I have been really helped by the team At Serreta Events - which is really close to you in Valencia. They do civil weddings in the resort or just receptions. The have been fab - sat me down and explained all my options and it´s really flexible. Not finally made my decision yet but like the look of the formal Country House style at the Cstel or a medievel style in the same place. Would recommend it! And they organise everything - vert reasonable against others I compared too. Good luck!!
