Most people have them, but there's no reason why you have to. I don't think anyone will mind.

No not strange however it would be unusual to not see even a thank you few words rather than speeches as such.
Sometimes the normal speech givers really really do not want to give one, sometimes the normal speech givers are just not present. Other times they may be so nervous that they cannot enjoy their food so a lot of times I see that the speeches are held before the meal. Make sure that your venue knows this though as it will impact the food timings.
