Speeches

Hayley, 5 September, 2021 at 15:11 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 1 16
Hello all. Just wondering if anyone is not having speeches and how you feel about them? I know my Dad would hate to do one. I am wondering if h2b and I could do a joint one just to basically thank everyone for being there.

We are not having speeches as my dad didn’t enjoy giving one at my sisters wedding years ago. He was relieved when I said no speeches! My fiancé may not even be having a best man or any groomsmen so we will just do a toast and say thanks to everyone for coming! Then we can eat and drink!

It’s my dads worst nightmare so my H2B will be making one because he wants to. We haven’t asked the best man yet how he feels about it but we’ll give him the option. My dad won’t be making one x

Yeah, it's really not my Dad's thing. My Mum did say today that she would make one if we wanted. Will speak to H2B again and we'll work something out.

Hi we are not doing speeches AT ALL - those that would traditionally feel uncomfortable with the spotlight on them so we scrapped them all together !

My dad is doing a speech, not sure about my h2b at the min as he doesn't like doing that kinda thing and neither do I, think we will probably just thank people and give out gifts rather than a full speech.

I hate the thought of the speeches because I generally find them boring, and because we have so many people it gets complicated in agreeing who could do a speech a who not, so I’m very keen not to have any speeches, and just have a quick thank you to all the relevant people. Also, having done a wedding speech I know it can be a lot of pressure and many people can’t relax and enjoy themselves until they’ve done it, and I want all my guests to be able to enjoy the whole night. I’m sure this was disappoint some family members though, so we’re thinking about whether we could come up with a compromise. We haven’t decided yet but some thoughts are having a small gathering the night before with close friends and family and letting anyone who wishes to make a speech then, or asking people to write speeches as they normally would and instead of reading them out having them printed into a little booklet. Perhaps we’ll come up with something else before the wedding!
But short answer, you’re not alone in not wanting speeches, and you should go with what feels right for you as a couple ☺️

Thanks Nathalie. I think the booklet sounds like a lovely idea. Our wedding is going to be pretty relaxed kind of event anyway, without a served meal so I'm hoping it will fit fine without speeches, and just a thank you from the two if us. Remember the day is about you and family will get over it if it's not exactly how they think it should be.

We’re not having speeches either. I’m trying to think of things we can do instead of speeches as I’m worried the guests will be bored without a bit of interaction. Any ideas?

My Dad passed when I was younger so my Brother is doing one in lieu of the FOB speech. If your Dad really doesn't want to maybe your mum or a sibling?. I am also doing a small speech, to be honest, it is entirely up to you, do what you feel comfortable with, you don't have to stick to traditions.

Surprise singing waiter , I booked one for my husband and it was amazing. It got everyone up singing and dancing after the pudding had been served.

I feel your pain! My h2b and his best man were both panicking! We googled and found a company called 'Great Speech Writing' who are brilliant - they are writing all our speeches for us now. My dad is even having some coaching with them so he feels like he is confident - bless him!

Wow, that's a lot to go through. We've decided no speeches and just a short thank you from us both, probably with welcome drinks
